The locating pins on my G/B inner cover are giving me a problem. One of them stands too proud of the inner cover to allow the outer cover to seat flush with the inner.
I tried heating the inner to 325 F and whacking the pin with a plastic faced mallet but it didn't budge.
The problem pin stands 0.302" above cover face. The other pin is 0.265"
Any suggestions? Hotter oven? Bigger hammer:)?

Thanks,
Ed

Maybe something sitting in the hole when the pin was put in, they are only there to locate the cover so it to long just shorten them to easy really.

Thanks Ashley. Do you know if they are easily removable? I didn't attempt tp pull it out after heating.
I guess I could just shorten it with a grinding wheel.

00-0577, Inner case dowel, locates the outer cover to the inner cover, as well as the inner cover to the G/B shell. I agree with Ashley in that it would be easier to cut down what you have, then to replace them. In my experience removing these dowels is destructive (to the dowel), for the most part; heat the case then apply the mother of all tools, the vice grip, grab tightly, twist while pulling; they do come out. Make sure that you have new parts standing by before committing to this operation; they are like teeth, once out they are not going back in. Do your measurements carefully, as the gearbox castings are thin enough to crack if addressed with too much stress.

And the answer is, much to my embarrassment, the outer cover holes were packed with crap. When relieved of that crap, they are plenty deep to accept pins, approx. 0.530".

I measured the outer cover dowel holes at close to 0.500 inches deep.
Your dowel stand-off in the inner cover should not be a problem.
The holes in the outer cover measure 0.215 inches diameter but seem to have a smaller step on the bottom of the hole. Perhaps you could just run a drill bit a bit further in the problem hole?

Don't feel embarrassed as its easy to happen to anyone you be surprised how crap can get into very tight places, some of these dowels are not a tight fit, I have lost one out of my primary case and was lost forever, funny how they roll somewhere on the floor to be lost, but I have steel round bar handy for things like that as well as alloy round its very handy having a lathe and milling machine in the workshop for making things when needed.
