Fuel injection.

In the late fifties there was the 'Wal Phillips fuel injector'. I've often thought about copying the castings of one a local guy has got and using it for historic racing with modern bits attached. There would a big argument with all the smart alecks, however one I thnk we'd win.

That Philips is a gravity feed like Lake which work under .5 PSI fuel pressure and mixed by pure mechanical fluid computer so is not adaptable for EFI that works by solenoid valves and electronic sensors. Lectron would be the current replacement evolution of these. QuikSliver carbs were also a further evolution with float bowl and accelerator pumps. If just pure top end power not much difference but response below that would favor EFI. I quized drag bike builders about their FI to find then are old school w/o electrobrain control.

All will be relieved when I have it up and running. Got to play my cards close to my chest.

OK. I meant, because you deserve to have fuel injection if you want it. Freedom from carb trouble.
You can't seriously expect me to divulge my trump card before I get the thing patented and working.
It involves a lot of work to get this stuff happening. I have a couple of business to run and other shit happening in life too.
When, and if, I am successful I will offer you the first one I have for sale.
I don't pretend to be a literary genius so I guess you will have to forgive me if I fail on that front. I do struggle with words, I'd be fecked without spell cheque.
Fire all your guns at once mate.

I'd like one that can feed 100 hp unboost and 160 on boost so not to strain the injectors.

Good luck on this project, but why do it. The engine design is from 1948. Don't see many trying to put electronic fuel injection on a '48 Ford flat head V8. The elegance is in an analog world.

I have to agree, a well tuned Commando starts and runs smooth, especially with electronic ignition. For a lot less than $2500.00, ( plus your labor I guess ), you can purchase a Tri-Spark ignition and Amal Premier Carburetors, set them and forget them. Easy to install and your Commando looks stock.
I did see the Colorado Norton Works fuel injected Commando at the Barber last fall. It is beautifully done and I am sure runs very well, but it is way out of my price range. Gotta go buy that Power Ball ticket.

I think I get. I am having have trouble differentiating the commercial exploitation from the brotherly love. Hence the seemingly generous helping of dingle berry pie.

I haven't mentioned how much I might sell my injector thing for, if at all. I haven't really got a clue at this stage.
But, I would not imagine it coming in at over a Kiwi grand all up. There isn't the value in the parts to justify the cost.
I have no plan to market it per se. Just flip them on to deserving mates to cover cost's.
There would not be any middle men to make 100 % profit on your back's either.
I have designed my own dedicated throttle body (Pro Engineering) that is small and easy to bolt on to the Norton head. It will resemble a carb but the manifold is not the Norton size or shape. Getting a rough prototype of it made on a StrataSys rapid prototype machine as soon as the bully lets me spend the housekeeping on it. Don't hold your breath. She need's a boob job and a face lift first.
It's still early day's.
To those who are wondering why I am doing this; don't waste your time. If you don't like it, fair enough. It's what I'm doing instead of watching TV.

I completly understand why you are doing this, and fully support it. I often do projects like this.
It's not something that will change the world, but it will keep you thinking and entertained.
Things like this keep me up at night thinking of solutions.

And if I were a betting man I would wager those same people poo pooing the idea will be some of the first ones to lay their money down when it's done.

Some people were just born to complain.

Are you talking about me?

As far as poo pooing ideas, I think anyone who know me around here realizes that I would try just about anything.

I like to think of myself as a full featured member. I ask for help and honest opinions and give help and honest opinions. I praise and yes, I complain.

When things seem funny, I question motive.

Throbber, you opened up and threw your thoughts and ideas up for all to respond. You got all that and more and then as wide as the door opened, the overwhelming enthusiasm cause the door to close just as abruptly. You mentioned that you were going to display an integral component for all to see but when the interest became a little intense you thought the better and pulled it all in "close to your chest". At least that how it seemed to me.

I my be totally off the wall, but I took this as a "feeling out the market" type of thread.
This is how I see it and right or wrong, it's my right to express it. Time will tell.
Other than the mention of dingle berries, I don't think that any of my comment here were particularly rude or off color.

Again, I am no purist but if anyone was going to attack or complain, I would think in would come from that school of thought. Other than that, it just a matter of integrity within the forum as a whole.

No I was not. Just thinking back to the rash of crap I got over building an aluminum swingarm.
The way some people were acting you would have thought I shot Kennedy

It seems when one thinks outside the box some people get scared and disproving.

I for one encourage that type of thinking, otherwise we would not progress as a community.

Don't exaggerate - that was because of the way that swingarm looked !

Someone showed a linked pic of a nice billet alloy Norton swingarm that someone supplies, as we recall.
It was nice looking bit of kit.
No weight saving, beautiful welds, nice STRONG item.
As a swingarm needs to be....

bwolfie,
Thanx for the comment and support.
I laugh at people who try to cut you down just because they don't understand or like what you are doing. Luddite's.
It says more about them than you.
Small minds and jealous hearts create bitter people who attack anyone who threatens their unbalanced world.
Some are just sad blow hard's who want to be shouting the loudest so everyone else will take notice as they make fool's of themselves.
I'm not doing this injector thing as a commercial venture. Far from it. I never thought of going into 'production'. I may make a few if there is interest.
Anyone drawing the inference that I am trying to test the market is fabricating that idea for their own reasons about which I care not to speculate.
I wish I had not posted this injection thing. Just got excited. No more, no less.
I see no point in posting a photo of the board, or any other part, until it's done and working. Then I will post a load of pics of the stages of development.
For feck sake you guy's, stop bitching at each other. Are we not men ?

Some of the rubbish posted on here makes us want to reach for the light sabre, and cut these thoughts to ribbons.....
But mostly folks just post tongue-in-cheek comments, and see the response.

If you haven't learned that yet, then you are not yet in the league of men....

And a little later

"I'm not doing this as a commercial venture"

Then why on earth would you spend tens of thousands and years attempting to get a patent? I had some exposure to the patent process many years ago when a relative came up with a new device that he felt was worth patenting. First off it has to be a fairly unique item to be worthy of a patent, then the money really starts to flow (away from you) Eventually, if you are lucky and the marketing goes well, there is payback. He was successful in getting the patent, but quite unsuccessful in marketing the product, so it was a major loss of capital, unfortunately.

I was one of the early posters who said go to it, good idea, worth a try. Stuff like the above contradictory bits make no sense at all, just sounds like bafflegab to me.

Almost all my comments are filled with irony, black humour and a stinking disregard for Political Concreteness. I take a very oblique perspective on thing's.
I have been roundly abused for such.
As a reformed bad boy and heavy weight martial art's exponent ( 40 years exp ) I have no doubt which league of men I am in.
