Hi folks,
I'm rebuilding my forks at the moment, and repairing a previous owners handiwork. The mudguard retaining studs in the sliders had been replaced with bolts which were slightly too long, and one of them had caused a small crack inside the slider resulting in a leaking front mudguard  I've got the correct replacement studs which I'll Loctite in, but before I do that can somebody kindly measure how far the studs stick out of the slider please?

Cheers,

cliffa.

You're better off using stainless button headed cap screws. They will give you more room to play with.

I would have much preferred to keep screws, but the threads were very iffy and as mentioned one was actually leaking fork oil, (and had actually had a bolt or stud broken off in the past) so I had no real choice but to put in studs and seal them with Loctite. Apart from that the sliders in in great shape.

Cheers,

cliffa.

I replaced those studs and nuts long ago with hex bolts. Button heads would have been a good alternative and clean looking.

Hex bolts are a better choice than button heads in that application as it’s easker to get a spanner (wrench) on the heads than an Allen key.

But IMHO the factory had it right with studs and nuts as it’s far less likely to damage the fork legs by cross threading etc when fiddling with the bolts in a difficult position.

What are the threads in the fork leg bosses? (I.e. if you're putting a screw in, is the thread a UNF, UNC, or a BS thread?)
