Hello

I am looking for some advice please on my 1973 850 frame ID plate. I have decided to do a cosmetic restore after 12 years of trouble free (well fairly) riding as the frame in particular is starting to get a bit tatty. I attach a photo (hope it works) that shows just a plain red plate which from other bikes I have seen looks a bit odd, Anybody know if this is usual for this year, it was first registered in March 1973.

Thanks

Never seen a plate like it before, looks like the supplier made a mistake and Norton fitted it anyway.

Or a PO painted the plate red?

The number is professionally stamped and it doesn't look home painted plus the rivets look right so it appears to be a factory one, I assume that if i buy a new one from AN then they will stamp the frame no on it?

Also I suppose I am a bit loath to change it if it was applied by the factory even as a mistake, part of it's history

A-N only supply the plate in its plain, un-stamped state.
I believe Norvil Motorcycles will provide what you require, but only if you send them your old one first. they then destroy the original - and understandably so.

Hi

Just having another play with photos, using photobucket now so lets see

Thanks for persevering, unfortunately the image is rather small and at too low a resolution to be able to tell much at all.

Any chance you could take a larger better quality close-up photo like the examples below?

Looks like an apprentice tooled up the last one!
Freudian typo if ever there was one on a Brit bike

Thanks for your patience, heres another at larger size, cant get square on yet as I am early stages of the distamantle process. Does anybody know if there is anywhere else on the frame where the number is stamped?

My '73 850 Interstate has the red plate, it was mounted on the headstock but I re-located it to the top of the frame tube under the seat when I fitted my fairing otherwise it would have been hidden by the fairing bracket,

Dave.

Does it look as if the red paint(?) was applied before or after the numbers were stamped (i.e red paint in the numbers)?

Is there a date stamp on the plate?

The certification plate/engine/gearbox number isn't usually found anywhere else on the frame. As your 850 was built before mid-'73 (March registered) it's unlikely to have the non-matching "F1" number (thus: *850*F1xxxxx*) that was stamped alongside the plate from around mid-73.

(* signifies the "limit marking" = 3 parallel lines within a circle).

There could also be a 5-digit number stamped on the headstock (thus: 00xxx) the significance of this marking is unknown.
You may also find a date stamp on the gusset plate behind the (L/H) footrest Z plate, and the frame part number is often stamped on the front face of the L/H fuel tank bracket.

The numbers look like they were applied after the plate was painted ie no paint in them, but no date stamp, just the number 306xxx which matches the engine number. The red under closer inspection has a bit of silver flecks in it, almost candy apple!!

No other numbers I can see on the frame except the part number on the front face of the L/H petrol tank bracket no is 064140. Only other number on the bike is the gearbox number which does have the limit marking (3 lines in a circle) the g/box number is 320756.
