Did you try 13/16" which probably needs to be a 3/8" square drive socket as a 1/2" drive socket probably won't fit into the stanchion unless machined?


Also, the damper tube should have two notches that a flat (wide impact driver bit etc.) or flattened/filed/ground rod will fit into.


My damper holding tool. Wide (not quite wide enough but does hold the damper-just) impact driver bit and holder,  1/2" sq. dr. extensions as required and T handle. 


Something that can work is to refit the fork spring and 'cap nut', then compress the fork as much as possible (fit back into the yokes then compress with ratchet straps?) so the spring compression applies friction to the damper assembly then 'shock' the slider bolt to unscrew.
