And the 1st real problem....chain or Ikon, the CNW chainguard will have to choose !!! Some banging and cutting will be necessary! too bad it is already painted!

Hi Phillipe, why do not you offset (outside) your bottom shock bolts? could be enough (i have done it with dial a ride Koni on my Commie)..Pierre

I suggest you read pdf p.97: http://britmoto.com/manuals/Manuals/850_man.pdf
Because there appears to be insufficient clearance between the shock mounting eye, swingarm plate and washer. Also, as fitted, the shocks will probably be slightly out of parallel to each other (closer together at the bottom than at the top) if both upper and lower shock mounting sleeves are of equal length.

This problem was the subject of a US recall.

So today was , at the request of my photographer friend, a studio shoot of my finished Commando... As I was playing assistant (I was a photographer 30 years ago), I discover a few things: digital for me is only to put things on ebay or make a snapshot for facebook or the internet, for "real" pictures I use my old 35mm or 6x6 film material... OMG! in between a digital Hasselblad and photoshop the possibilities are endless and you can mix 30 shots to make a good one; depressing for a photographer but great results!!! Second thing I noticed: now that my bike is "immortalized" I am not sure I am happy about her... too many contradictory lines (pipes/mufflers/seat/paint green stripes): it does not flow together very well and added with the big disc, small (and painted) fenders and lack of grab rail, it shrinks the size all together... headlamp ears are too long, I should have polished the engine, replace more bolts etc. BUT it felt good to seat on her (1st time with the CNW seat) and remember all the great time we had together!!!!

Wow ... that is one gorgeous bike !!! Great pics too. If it were mine though, I would have to remove the sidecovers and repaint, aligning the stripe to the top of the Z-plate, not the top of the sidecover. If ya align painted stripes, or stickers, parallel to the TOP of the sidecover ... well, er ... ya get what ya see here. Still a beautiful machine though !

Great bike. What is even greater is that you don't ever have to be finished. There's always an opportunity for a "director's cut" and you can make Han shoot whenever you want.

WIth the high pipes and the seat it's got a BMW GS or other dual sport look. Maybe it looks different with the suspension compressed.

You already know about the side covers but the only other thing I'd change is the heat shield.

First step

The side cover stripe seems to conflict with the upswept pipe. And at least in the picture the heat shield draws your eye to the area too.

Overall a gorgeous bike!

Thats a great build. Yes the stripe is out but, Looks real good :D . How did you do the Filler cap for the roadster tank?

I have a good friend beating on metal as a hobby....He took my accident-smashed tank and cut a square on the top to bang from the inside:

on a separate sheet of metal he made an indent to sink in the new Harley cap, drill the holes, welded the piece in place and voila!!! some bondos was needed before the paint!

Wow! that is a beautiful machine. Lots of very nice mechanical bits to tease the eye and satisfy.
and I like the combination of the various parts. It becomes unique and causes thought.

I really like the flushed-in gas cap and wondered how to go about doing that. hmm, I have a couple
old tanks around...
BTW, I really appreciate all the wisdom and inspiration this board brings. And Philippe,
Here's hoping you get to ride sooner than later.

I think that if the green stripe on the tank was nearer the bottom edge, it would seem to flow with the green frame tube. The front fender needs to be repositionned so the front hugs the tire closer, even if the back looks more distant, it would look better. Just nit picking, the bike looks great

Jean

Yes sir its so worth the nit picking to have ohhs and ahh's by you and everyone resting their desires on it. I'd not notice the fender till Jean pointed it out and still hard to detect. I just went through mounted similar and took me and wife holding it for best compromise with the emphasis on centering and leveling the front over the tire. Made it stick out at bottom rear but in vision line with the tire spray back and allows attaching and mud flap - which I must.

The paint line on tank looks right to me, but the tanks seems too low at front, covering full view of the reflector and coil pack and misaligning with frame - seat 'flow'. Bar clearance premitting of course. Diddling the seat bumers and tab slots can fine tune that compromise to tank and frame line.

LIke removing the finger prints on polished alloy, the better it gets the more the almost nothings pop out and your is like that, so good a dust mote is annoying! Best wishes exposing it and your self to road fates.

Doubting myself...

Should I had kept (=buy again) the front S look with huge handlebars and "press-Tour de France" headlight rim.... or shoul I stop watching 10 years old pictures???

Looks cleaner the way it is, so stop looking at old pictures when the bike is completed.

As usual you are right Jean... I should work on my older project (started before my accident) and side-lined by the Commando...

Outstanding job, love the ss pipes and I generally don't like colored frames on bigger bikes, but you pulled it off with that green, Only two things I'd change it taking the heat shield off and either removing the side cover stripe or straighten it. How did surgery turn out for you if I may ask; I'm guessing well?

OMG!!! I forgot to show the left side  (I am so vain!)

PS: it will be difficult to keep the pressure till the next "bike of the year" challenge!!!
