Hi all!

Has I questioned you this week about problems with my gearbox and clutch adjustments, and erverything is now ok for that, i am about to start it for the first time since three years.

Oil is there, clutch, gears, battery work fine. I have sparks on the plugs. So I did try to start it.

When I kick the bike in neutral, something in then gearbox turns, I can hear it. But I don't have compression. When I engage in first gear, the rear wheel turns, which is normal I guest.

Could this be a bad clutch adjustment?

Here is the YouTube link. https://youtu.be/YG-2lQuEMeE

Sorry it's in French.

Re: First start after rebuilding ans kickstart is free

The clutch is dragging just enough to cause the wheel to turn but not enough to turn over the engine . Try stopping the wheel somehow when in gear , I bet it will slip the same way it does when trying to kick the bike over. The clutch is not grabbing enough ,my guess. You gotta fix that. :D

with the spark plugs in you still don't have compression?

if not, stick a pencil in the sparkplug hole and slowly kick it over in neutral. watch and see if the pencil raises or lowers, if it does your gearbox is fine.

you didn't muck with adjusting the valves did you?

The clutch has nothing to do with the kickstart turning the rear wheel.

better think about that

Re: First start after rebuilding ans kickstart is free

The screw that holds the pushrods was putting to much pressure on the plates. I unscrew everything, loosen up the lever, put everything back in place, with less pressure, and everything is now good.

Another question, if the previous owner put a single carburetor, with only a choke lever, How do I get the gaz in the engine, for it's first start? Only by kicking? I can't find any answer.

Regards!!

It isn't possible (under normal circumstances) to prevent the rear wheel turning when the kickstart is operated 'in gear' as the drive from kickstart shaft to sleeve gear doesn't pass through the clutch.

It looks like a Mikuni VM in your video?

If so, there's no tickler, just the choke lever which operates an enriching circuit within the carb.

Exactly LAB. do I only have to lift up the choke lever, and the gaz will go?

You actually push the VM choke lever down for choke ON (which raises the choke plunger) and lift the lever for choke OFF.

With choke on, and keeping the throttle closed or only raised a very small amount, it should start (if everything else is in order  ).

Thank you! Wish me luck! :P

Yes, good luck!

We hope to see the video of it running soon. :)

My 750 starts with a small amount of throttle when kicking over.

My 850 will only start if I give it no throttle while kicking, then a wee bit after it has fired. I have read on this forum that is is quite common for this to happen.

What model commando does this fellow have???

Dereck

Mikuni enrichener circuit relies on a CLOSED throttle to draw fuel through. Any opening of the throttle will nullify/reduce the enrichener.

Hi dereck, I have a 74 roadster commando, running on a single Mikani carb. I will try tonight.

In my experience with the Mikuni on initial start up after rebuild as the carb was off another commando it involved a bit a bit of "fettling" but it's working well now and as concours says closed throttle on start up and your away. Best of good fortune with the bike.

Just to keep you up to date, I finally remove my carburator and it was stuck in 3 years of gaz evaporated! LOLL

I am going to the bike shop to get some carb cleaner.

I will keep up the news.

Carb cleaner may not be enough. Be prepared to poke a fine wire through EVERY passage, then verify flow with aerosol spray.
