first big ride after top end rebuild 71 norton

So I have been sharing my garage follies and the occasional road follies with the group on this bike. I have another thread to share and it surroubds the post setup of my recent head/top end build completion.

I took an annual ride out with my dad and his touring folks through ojai for the 300 or so mile ride. Last time I did it I was spewing oil from the crankcase to the primary. This time wasn't as rough! This ride covers mostly country roads and has plenty of canyon twists and tight stuff with a mix of elevation (over the grapevine) and a healthy sorted mix of flatlands and sweepers to ride on. All in all its a route that put a test on my bike.

I spent a few hours doing another valve adjustment and making sure things were all in order. Tire pressure chain oil etc. All was good and I headed out.

The day was as perfect as could be. The bike ran very well with great power and I was able to keep up with the guys with the exception of a friend with a rc51 that came along.

I do have a question though. When my bike first starts and is at idle there is a little white wmoke from the pipes. When under power this is gone. When I compression test they are both 160+lb. I have about 400 miles now on the rebuild. I'm sure its broken in as far as it could be.... I traded bikes with my dad for 30 miles during the trip and from behind my bike there's no funky smells nor is there any trace of smoke at all. Its just when I start it up and idle!

Any ideas??

Otherte than that I had a great ride without issues at all. Carburation was good too but I did get a couple pops on decelleration. My other bike does that too. Sounds racy heh...

popping on deceleration usually means your carbs are letting a tad too much air with the throttle closed

so, I would just turn in your carb air screws a quarter turn each to see if this slight enrichment makes it go away

it not, then turn in a little more until, but if this does not work then I would suspect a slight air leak between the carb to the manifold or manifold to head, maybe check all the securing bolts to see if nicely snug?

The white smoke only on startup? With a freshly rebuilt head and no other symptoms, I would forget about it!

Ill re check seat the carbs and manifolds then test... If I pop ill slight turn in those air screws.

Ill promptly forget about that start up puff...
