I just got back from NCDMV tag office with a title/registration card/tag for my commando!! at last after many many months we are legal...in case anyone cares to try and tag an antique vehicle in NC with no title here is what you have to do
1. make sure bill(s)of sale are notarized
2. set up time/place for NC Highway Patrol License and Theft officer to inspect vehicle..i had them come to my house but had to wait 2 1/2 weeks or you can trailer vehicle to their office.
3. inspector will take pics of engine/frame numbers and vehicle overall and run tnumbers on the spot through national theft database..he had a computer in his car for that..mine came back engine clean frame to stolen but recovered bike of different brand back in 1978...the six digit Norton numbers proved challenging for the database.
4. Officer fills out an inspection report and will send it to you.
5. In the meantime you fill out and have notarized an affidavit of facts concerning how you got the vehicle and why no title.
6. You get 2 valuations from credible sources...thanks Rick at Sandy Run Cycles in Shelby and Greg Marsh in virginia!!
7. Take valuations to insurance bond place..state farm did mine...get bond.
8. Get insurance..ditto state farm...get proof of insurance document
9. take all paper work to DMV and pray.
10. I paid state/dmv $160 for title and other fess and tag and bond was $100.
This is a long and not so cheap process but I am now an expert at it..hope this helps someone out
