Help needed!
Background - i am getting fairly regular false neutrals on my 961 between 1st and 2nd on upshift and 3rd and 4th again on upshift.
I stripped down And have clutch basket off but want to check before i pull gearbox.
1 ) how much endfloat should there be in the mainshaft - I have about 3-4 mm and
2)how thick should the spacer behind the clutch basket be ? I have a single 8mm thick spacer (CNW Manuals show single spacer thickness? ) but norton manuals show 2 spacers but don’t indicate thickness)
Thanks Mike

Contact Coote's in Canada , he has done many transmissions . There is only one spacer . You live in England , you can contact Norton , they will help you. This is from the Euro 4 manual , and Coote's made the CNW manuals .

Thanks Tony
Useful. I must have a pre - euro 4 manual from Norton as it shows 2 spacers.

Do you have many miles on the bike? I found plenty of false neutrals initially but the problem went away with use.

Before ripping things apart, did you check to see if the engine sprocket nut is loose?
A loose lock down nut can cause false neutrals as well.

Thanks another thing To check
Definite! There is a design problem with the sprocket nut lock washer; it gets squeezed out and the nut can undo. Mine undid. Really easy to check it; I made a heavy duty lock washer to fix.

FYI if you open things up inspect the rivets carefully on the clutch basket (ref many postings on subject) and I upgraded my clutch plates to EBC racing which improved my clutch action.

Sprocket all tight. rivets checked and look unworn, tension on backlash gear checked / Increased A bit, I ensured selector mechanism at midpoint, all gearbox internals look unworn and straight
all back together Now and runs / changes through box on axel stands , road test tomorrow.

Good luck Spike. My least favourite 961 component the gear change connector rod (poor) adjustment and/or security may have impact. A bit obvious I know but this poorly designed component could be associated with multiple gear change problems, when it is not failing mid ride of course.

Fingers crossed you’ve resolved it:)

Well that seems to be sorted an hours test ride and just one false neutral on 4-5th when on overrun
