Factory Tech Support for 961s via email

The owners club age profile will change. The committee and chair in particular has welcomed new 961 owners its just a few people who have terrible people skills in the NOC and love to mouth off. They know who they are. I hope things will get better and hopefully the owners club members will recognise the need to be more welcoming! Member and 961 sport owner.

I stopped subscribing a few years ago for that reason. I took out the subscription again last year but I'm unlikely to renew it. Their so-called " technical forum for all modern Nortons" has little technical value and is mostly an opportunity for certain members to repeatedly whinge about the problems they experienced and for others to offer ill-informed advice, such as how to tune the carburettor on a 961.

A posting today in response to a guy who is having battery/charging problems started with "I don't own a 961 and never will (Between you and me I probably wouldn't have one as a gift!) but, assuming it's electric start........". I don't have much time for people with that attitude. I rode to school on my ES2 over 50 years ago so I don't regard myself as a "new" Norton owner, but a lot of the NOC members seem too set in their ways. There are exceptions, probably the guys who also belong to this forum.

I have tried to steer the NOC posts over to here for technical advice, as I have found it invaluable. While it's great that the factory is starting up again I think there will be areas where the Access Norton members have more experience and knowledge, such as with the older ECUs for example. There are a couple of technical guys who used to work for Norton who post on the "Norton Commando 961 Motorcycles" Facebook page, it would be good if they could be encouraged onto this forum.
If you look at the NOC website, I have just replied to the pillock on there ,and you are right there are some right old W**kers in the NOC. unfortunately Anna J hasn't been chirping in for quite a while now, whether she got sick of being attacked every time she posted or has just not renewed her membership as she threatened to do many times or couldn't spell F**k O** ( that's just a reference to her spelling technique) for those of you who don't read 'The Roadholder' magazine , I don't know. It's a pity really as her opinions were always good reading.

I think it's a combination of things; a fear of their beloved marque becoming devalued (perfectly valid), the unfortunate human trait of a group enjoying the assault of a perceived common enemy, and a misjudged opinion of 'more money than sense' 961 owners. As we know from this forum most owners are dyed in the wool bikers often with racing experience who are just as passionate about the Norton name. I often wonder if you approached 'classic' Commando owners what modifications and upgrades they would like to the engine, suspension and braking they would probably describe the 961!

So really the best approach would be to make contact with NOC branches to prove we are real bikers and just as keen that the reputation of the Norton name continues.

Being in the NOC for 35 years I have enjoyed my membership but I do think there is an attitude with some members in the club, if your bike is not a pre 1977 Norton they really do not want to know and look on 961 owners as having more money than sense. Well I have a 2016 sport and it's very good the only gripe is keeping the battery charged and she looks well along with the F1 which I have owned for 30 years bought these bikes because I like them and I do not have a lot of money but I enjoy them and this forum. Was in NOC in the 70's/80's but not now. I regularly review the Norton Owners FB page, some absolutely stonking rebuilt/restored/original/custom Commando's on there... but the attitude towards any 961 post, by the same 1% of members, is shameful gutter level trolling.
