Found this today in my 71 commando project . this bike sat untouched for about 35 years.
it was inside the oil tank . It’s a ZIPPO lighter ?
took awhile to fish it out , I could hear it banging around as I removed the tank.
I just contacted the previous owner to see if he knows Peter .

Should be a match stick striker on the bottom, so you're found yourself a matchstck holder.
If you find any hallmark anywhere it's silver.

This is a zippo lighter with the guts removed .
I think possibly it was used to hide your stash in the days they wanted to lock us up for a joint.
maybe the cops were coming and peter just dropped it into the tank to hide it ?
just guessing how it got there

Good guess.
Remember, at that time a seed of marijuana found in the carpeting of your Mustang would merit 20 years of prison time.

They said this stuff was dangerous then .led to harder drugs
now that they figured how to make money off it
its perfectly harmless .
I was in the gambling business , the grey area games were kinda illegal . Then when THEY came to agreements of how to split the proceeds , they made us legal .
then they proceeded to gouge the operators more and more until they realized there was a lot of money , then THEY kicked the legal operators out and put in their own equipment .
you can only win for a short time until THEY want it all .
i soldout to other operators before THEY took it all .

If it was for hiding an illegal stash, the owner's name won't be Peter...unless he was real dumb!

Perhaps it was an early attempt to add an oil preheater for cold climate use?

I had a number of Zippo Windproof lighters back in the day; the hinge seemed to be the weak link, but Zippo would fix them for free and pay the return postage; not sure if this is still the case.

Anyway, if the Zippo in this post has any value to you in any sense check out this link:

Best.

If it's a Zippo, you can still send it back to be repaired. If it's a full size Zippo, the company now makes butane inserts for their old full size lighters that turn them into useful cigar lighters.

Neat. My name's Peter, if you can't find the owner or would like to part with it I will buy it from you. I have a small collection.
