Folks,

I know there are cut off dates for the different Euro regs, but, are these dates the dates of manufacture or registration?

For example, if one buys a bike in 2020 that is a ‘new old stock’ unregistered bike that was manufactured in 2016, how difficult will it be to register when it was built to Euro 3 compliance but the current requirement is for all ‘new’ bikes to be Euro 4?

Seems like this will hit mostly the.likes of Godet, etc?

I would expect any dealer with NOS bikes would register them before the deadline and pass along the costs to the buyer, as well as any reduction in warranty period.

No the Godet boys have it sorted now, I can’t recall exactly how, but they have.

A mate of mine has found a ‘new old stock’ 2016 bike for sale by a collector. And such bikes come up on eBay etc quite often, hence my interest.

My mates bike is unregistered, and it’s in Italy. And he wants to import it to the U.K.

It was me who asked him “are you sure you’ll be able to register it when here in the U.K.?”

I got a blank expression, and a worried look that he could be stuck with an expensive bike he can’t use!

The bike is Euro 3 certified, as it should be being a 2016 bike.

But the requirement for a ‘new’ bike now is Euro 4.

Can anyone tell me if he’ll encounter any difficulties registering it or not?

he has written to the DVLA but not yet had a response.

It's not a new bike though - just unregistered , it's 2016 and should be judged on the requirements of the day

Well you’ll not get any arguments from me on that!

But does the DVLA share our pragmatic approach?

Trouble is it depends on the DVLA muppet who processes the form, luck of the draw. If it was in dealer stock in UK then I would make it a condition of sale for a V5 to be present, coming from outside UK from private seller is a lottery and the NOVA needs an odometer entry so 0 or a very low mileage could send the DVLA into a hissy fit.

Y’all WOULD NOT BELIEVE the chats that have taken place with the DVLA so far.

Is it Diesel? No, it’s a motorcycle produced in 2016 to Euro 3.

Was it manufactured after 1992? Yes, it’s a motorcycle produced in 2016 to Euro 3.

Etc. Etc.

The Two Ronnies or Monty Python script writer could not have done better.

The final comment was “when you have imported the vehicle and submitted the relevant forms, we will be able to advise”.

To which the reply was “that doesn’t really help me much, I haven’t yet purchased the motorcycle, I wanted to ensure I could register it here first, what if I buy the motorcycle and then find out that I cannot register it”?

Answer: “I cannot advise on that”.

Brilliant.

British administration at its absolute worst !

Sadly so predicable, backside covering in case they said yes and then when bike arrived the computer said NO.

I had a similar experience a few years ago when I was advising them of a capacity change for one of the bikes.
In the end I realised they weren't all bad, it was just that I was dealing with a fucking idiot.
That knowledge helped me through the pathetic procedure, I don't think I'd ever tell them in the future, as long as the insurance company are aware I think it would be ok.
