Hi,

Just took delivery of a new 961 SF, 1st ride out today

Loving the bike and the attention it draws, however ive noticed it is pinking under load in all gears when accelerating, tried a new tank full of super unleaded, but still the same

Although its new, I bought it privately from a collector, so think it might need the map upgrade that was released last year sometime..?

Also noticed the engine management light (EML) doesn't come on when the ignition is on before I start the bike, like it says it should in the manual..?

Can someone confirm if yours comes on prior to starting..? Then goes off once started...?

Many thanks

My light does not come on, It might help us if you put your location in your signature!

What year is your 961. I see in your post that you bought it from a private owner, so I am not sure what model year you have

My EML light does not come on with ignition. The oil pressure light comes on with ignition and goes out once the bike is started.

As far as "pinking" (or pinging as we say in the States) This has been a problem with the lean fuel mixture that is mapped into the ECU to comply with government requirements. A new remap will most likely help with pinking, and dramatically improve performance. I guessing that you might be UK based. If so, Krazy Horse can do remaps

John

Thanks John

Yes based in UK, I registered the bike this month 2015, but it was built I think in late December 2013, so I think I will need the remap

Interesting that your EML doesn't come on with the ignition either, that's not what my owners manual says, it says it comes on with the ignition to prove its working then goes out once started if there are no faults. Yes oil light comes on and goes off as it should once started

Im not far from Donnington Hall were they are made so I guess ill give them a call and get the remap done, and ask about the EML light also

Thanks for info

My EML light does not come on either. I don't believe it ever has.

My dealer, Munroe Motors in San Francisco, is looking in to that now as it may relate to a situation that has occurred a few times when the bike appears to go into "limp home mode", where it is prevented from revving past 4K rpm. After shutting down and restarting (control alt delete?), it runs perfectly again.

They are trying to connect into the ECU but are having difficulties with the recently received ECU connector cable. A new one is on its way. Will advise when I know more.

I cant tell you what the EML light looks like, so I don't think its ever come on when I turn the ignition on.

Boomer what pipes does it have and what mileage? Is it run in? My Sport sounded like a bag of spanners initially, but its now got long open pipes and the 077 remap that came out late last year. It used to pink a lot, but the remap cured that. I found a crude way of telling if the bike had the right map, the MPG went down to 42 from mid 50s!

Standard (very quite pipes)! But I've got the short open ones to put on once I've run it in, only covered about 100 miles so far! Must try harder!!

I agree engine is very noisy , idle also a bit erratic at times, and pinking quite badly, can't be doing the engine much good...? I would be much happier with less mpg and a sweeter running motor than good fuel economy! If that was a concern I would have bought a 50cc scooter!! :D I'm sure the remap will go a long way to sought it, think I'm going to call Norton Donnington tomorrow and see if I can sought out a remap.

It appears from the answers I'm getting ref the EML light that it doesn't come on with ignition, strange that the owners manual says it should....?

Boomer now I understand.... I believe you have just had the 'what the f*ck is that noise?' moment, when you hear a 961 run for the first time, not run in, and with stock pipes on.

Suck it up for 500 miles, the non tickover, silent exhaust, incredibly noisy engine, 3800rpm redline etc until 500 miles. Then shell out for the worlds most expensive Motad exhausts and the fuel remap. It transforms the bike and the then u can sufer the rest of the running in period without feeling like a dork.

Once you hit 1000 miles a whole new world opens up, with a fantastic soundtrack..... :D :D :D :D

Hi Boomer - can confirm EML light doesn't come on when you turn on ignition - the manual was written for the early bikes and they changed the ECU to a different company after the first few batches gave problems. I have short noisy pipes on my Jan 2013 Sport and the bike was remapped when these were fitted at the 500m service. I believe there is a further remap available but Touche at the factory, just before he left, identified that it was not applicable to my bike. It may be to do with the intro of Nikasil bores which occurred in the spring of 2013. I have sent you a PM as I'm in South Yorkshire so not too far away - Alan

Hi Alan,

Yes the factory confirmed there is no EML light when I visited yesterday for the remap

Now running remap 077 I think..? And I've fitted the short sports silencers

The bike is now alive!! Sounds much better and there is no pinking :D
