I have a 1973 Commando and I want to fit an electric start, can any one advise on the best kit to get, what price I should be paying and the best place to get one in the UK

Alton is the way to go. It is not cheap granted but it is well made an their after sales service an backup is first class. I got mine from Hawkshaw motorcycles. It is the policy of Alton not to sell direct to the customer in those countries (like the UK) that have agents in them.
You will never tire of the joy of push button starting. The kit is easy for the average machcanicly able to fit an does not look out of place either. (For my eye it fills the odd space where mag was on earlier motors nicely)

Agree re Alton. I have had one on my Commando for nearly 2 years now. I had some initial trouble with two successive alternator rotors but Alton revised the design and the current version has been bulletproof. The beauty of the Alton starter In addition to the fact that it works great, is that it is a pretty simple installation requiring no modification to oem parts.

Don't forget about DynoDave Commeau's starter kit. Ken Canaga loves his and its so potent it startles people when thumb commensor activated.

That's a starter motor upgrade for the Mk3, it isn't a kit to fit a starter to earlier models.
