Dynojet

Hi9 Smudge I have had exactly the same response. Will see if I can chat to someone at the Excel show next week.

Not too much info there. I am fortunate that I am very happy with my Nortons fueling at the moment!

I see folks saying a power commander would be nice and I agree but I just read a few hours ago a guy from Texas that was sharing an ecu map also used a power commander. Nobody asked him about that, I'm wondering if nobody picked up on that. I can't find the damn post now...

We all picked up on it. Unfort the guy spent $800 on that and within the same week, norton UK put out the new and revised 077 and 091 and when compared to the dyno charts. The new uk maps beat his. But his was way better than the uk original maps.

Don't get caught up on maps. 077-0116 or 091-0116 are fantastic. Ive put over 5,000miles on the new maps.

once you upgrade your ignition the bike instantly is better. Then choose a map depending on your exhaust.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. I've been eyeing the wires and coils in combo with some iridium plugs. My bike is a late 14 and has never had any map updates. Normally I wouldn't care but it seems a lot of issues have been fixed over the past few years with map updates. I know it doesn't need constant updates like a cell phone but theres obviously improvements that have been made and mine have never been addressed. I'll start with ignition and Once I get my exhaust sorted I'll revisit the maps unless I just go motec and never look back. I'd rather do that then spend the money on full exhaust so we will see, it's not cheap but neither is full exhaust that makes hardly any gains on a bike with tuning issues.

Hello Foster961 , What is motec ?

OK , Just found it on the internet . MOTEC Engine Management & Data Acquisition Systems .

Do an ohms check on the oem coil against the bosch one I sourced and shared. That moment will make you realize you made the right choice. Then do the same on the wires.

Have fun

PS be sure to add a transmission vent too.

I'm not sure if you're on my email list, if not, pm me your email and I'll send you everything ive ever sent out.

I wash just looking at my fill plug and wondering how crucial that vent was! Great advice. These are the little things I need to catch up on. I'll pm that info, thanks!

If you work on your own bike, do something today that you will thank-yourself later for.

- Go to your local store and get iridium plugs
- Get some PROGRIP grips (it's amazing how much a $15 item can improve your riding experience on the Norton)

Go to the CNW website and order the following;
- Bosch Coil
- ONE07 Racing Wires
- ONE07 Clutch Jam (You will need this one day)
- ONE07 Transmission vent
- ONE07 Gear Jam (very handy little tool)
- ONE07 Gear Puller (Unless you have a small one already)
- ONE07 Battery Mat
- ONE07 Starter Solenoid Rebuild Kit - optional purchase now but you will need it one day. (Unfort. if you have a low battery, the starter does not have enough power to turn the engine and the solenoid contacts flicker and rapidly wear out which makes starting it harder and harder to do each time. If they completely wear out, then this tool replaces and sets new contacts without removing the starter from the bike. Once you see whats involved to remove the starter, you will be glad we figured this out for you.. :)

- Then upgrade the ignition and add the vent.
- If you have close to 1,000 miles, do a head torque.
- Adjust your Butterfly Stop (IDLE SCREW - that's not really an idle screw the ECU does that) Read my manual carefully on this and make sure you do it right or your idle will climb way over 2,000rpm when the bike gets warm which could cause an accident. PS - You also need a locking nut.
- Contact Jonathan Reece -Skeleton Cycles DENVER and send him your ECU for a remap and re BIN file.

IF YOU DO ALL THESE THINGS, You will have the Norton 961 experience that is extremely satisfying and you will no longer be thinking you need to fix anything to make the bike better!!

Now that's the run down I'm talking about! It is head retorque time it looks like too! I really want to do preventative maintenance tonake sure I can enjoy this thing and make sure I can sell it without taking a hit. I'll be coating the tank too.

Richard, I suggest that that list - concise, clear, complete is EXACTLY what many new, and potentially new ,961 owners and existing owners new to this site, REALLY need!

I think it should be a "sticky thread" or whatever it's called where you constantly update the list to include new solutions and tools as they become known / available.

That way, any new owner, or exisitng owner new to this site, can easily access the 'one stop' list on how to sort out their 961. It would even help potential owners to understand what they're getting into before doing so, so that at least they can pro-actively address the known issues on there new bike BEFORE being let down and getting all frustrated by it.

Wadya say Richard, Jerry, LAB? Can we do this?

Excellent point Eddie! Get in touch with Jerry Doe to get it done.

Well, thanks for the reminder anyway. I just ordered the wires and coils from cNw.

Richard, I am working through the upgrades and thought I would try this test, although I wasn't sure how to do it. I found some instructions (I think it was an Aprilia site where they were using the same coil). It said the primary circuits are measured across terminals 1a - 15 and across 1b - 15, and the secondary circuits are measured across 15 - 4a and across 15 - 4b (with the negative prod on pin 15). Is this correct?

I'm getting weird readings for the secondary coils and I don't know whether it's the meter playing up. What readings should I expect?

PS - I've bought the leads and the various CNW tools but I haven't yet bought the Bosch coil as I will get that in the UK.

Thanks

I'm only on my phone and away and i would have to look it up on the spec sheet. I should be able to answer tomorrow when I'm back at my pc if you havent found the answer by then. Also, same coil as some racing snowmobiles and small mercedes cars. If you figure it out, please post it so I know you found it. Trying to remember but I think the middle prong is power and to each side of it is each coil stage. So do an ohms check from middle pin to an outside pin and then compare to the original coil. Set your ohms magnification or scale so its an easy number to compare. Like 400 and not 40003456 or 0.0040. As an example. PS -- make sure your fingers are not touching the pins or you will get inaccurate readings. And scratch the pins so you are getting a good connection. Just to add to this. I mentioned comparing the ohms but its really a combination of all the characteristics that make the coil. Tje reaistance is the easiest to compare. Same with the wires resistance. You want the best insulting properties for both coil and wires. If you google bosch coil twin single fire coil 221-503-035 you will find specs. Thats what the coil is. Its a very high quality coil. The knock off coils from other countries just do not compare. This coil is a common knock off as its very popular in a lot of Mercedes cars. I do not know the part number for the OEM norton coil but the bosch one is definitely a better made product. But for most of the 961 owners, it doesn't matter because they will never even start their bikes. Just collect them. I'm only on my phone so it's tough to share things but also look up BOSCH MOTORSPORTS IGNITION COILS SINGLE FIRE FOR PERFORMANCE ENGINES AND POWERSPORTS. You will find this coil is most popular for a ton of bikes and sleds and jet skis and all sorts if stuff. So be warned there are plenty of fakes out there.
