I'm having a hell of a time mounting my dunstall rearsets to my '72 commando.

I apologize for not having a photo of the rearsets readily available, I can snap one when I get home if need be. They include the zplates with rear mounted controls and passenger footpegs.

Everything bolts up just fine until it comes time to mount the Dunstall Decibel exhaust system to the z plates.

Bets photo I have of the current setup

My best guess so far is that I need horizontal mounts as seen here.

for all I know the answer is staring me in the face

This might help. You can see the mounts Dunstall supplied for the Z plates with the full Power Exhaust System. You might be able to fab up something similar for your bike with just the silencers.

This pic shows the brackets you got if you just bought the silencers.

There's a better picture here of the mounts Dunstall sold to fit the silencers to stock Commandos.

Thanks ken. I've got some old dunstall catalogs that tell me the same thing. As i'm trying to keep everything as original as possible my goal is to get my hands on some genuine dunstall brackets. I've got every damn piece to this bike except for the brackets.

Perhaps someone has a pair of dural mounts buried in their garage?

Madass has the best replicas I've seen. I should have various templates for stock and alternative set-ups I'll try to post when I get back home. I'm travelling so it will take a few days.

I guess you need the big Dunstall plates that replace the Z plates, I cant help there, I have one set which I intend to use as samples for casting new ones some day not soon, or you could fit the plates as suggested like the ones on Ebay.

Got the ebay mount plates in the mail today. Unfortunately no go.

Here are my rear sets. They are early and unmarked. I feel slightly more confident that the dural mounts above are what I need. Confirmation would be oh so sweet however.

Those look homemade and not the same pattern as Dunstalls. They look lower down at the bottom and they don't go as far back. I'm working 6 days a week so haven't had a chance to dig into my dunstall stuff. I broke my original dunstall plates in 3 -4 pieces ea. in a crash but I was able to trace the pattern and make a set with the same dimensions. I'll try to get at this tomorrow.

When I look back through my dunstall lit I notice a few ever so slightly different styles of plates. Some read dunstall, some don't, some are slightly longer than others to accomodate the power exhaust system. I have the orignal dunstall order form and paperwork leaving me fairly certain these are originals. Could very well be wrong.

Definitely interested in what you may come up with. Quit working so hard!

What is keeping you from simply bolting these on?

The plates bolt onto the bike just fine, the problem involves mounting the exhaust. The stock exhaust brackets don't match.

If you look at the Dural mount in the Dunstall pictures, it shows an additional piece off the muffler that I'm unfamiliar with. It's not one of the steel plates I believe you picked up off Ebay. I'm running a 2-1-2 and use the steel plates because the silencers are pushed back due to the pipes. I don't know who's pipes those are but if you remove the outer stock muffler mount plate and mount the steel plate to the rubbers you may be in luck. For what it's worth, I have the stock z-plates on. My setup looks like that on the Interstate and Roadster above.

Dear John,
I have this if you can help.
Note that i plugged some old holes on the plates because i will do it better again.
Ciao.
Piero

I believe I'm in the realm of a little fabrication work in order to make this happen. I just found this photo, definitely looks like the correct mounts to me. Look very simple in construction.

This 1st. photo is the replica I traced from the original ones I broke in a crash. They had the "DUNSTALL" name cast in like pierodn's lightened ones.

I think the 3 holes in the back lined up to stock norton mount plates. The Dunstall Debicel Mufflers were longer and have a long slot that you slide the bolts in. It's a tight fit so it prevents the bolts from turning. I made up these rear mount plates to get more reach for the long mufflers.

In this last shot I vicegripped the 2 plates together as they would fit. I also ran a support rod from the rear frame loop behind the shock mount down to the back of the muffler support plate where it bolted to 2 rubber mounts there.

Thank you to everyone for the help. I've got some great starting points now
