This morning I got up put on my Edward Green Boots, Green Watch Trousers, Work shirt, Tweed Vest, wool tie, and Barbour Jacket. You have to be dressed right for this type of event. Mounted the moto tote on the Rover and made my way to Gold Coast for some heavy negations. I am now officially the owned of the classic black and gold 961.

So now I need your help?? What upgrades do I need? "I know adding upgrades is like having a beautiful new born baby and getting it's ears pierced". What should I add and where should I purchase these add ons?

New pipes and remap. Can be done at the same time. I have 2 SF's, a 2014 and 2015. One has South Bay DT pipes, the other has the shorty Motad pipes. Both systems are decatted. I am partial to the Motads, but have no experience with the new generation of South Bay pipes

You can break the bike in with new free flowing pipes, but you MUST have it remapped for the pipes, or it will run too lean.

Get to know Richard 7 and get his workbook of upgrades and maintenance write-ups

And congrats on the purchase

John

I never tire looking at these bikes, including my own. Stunning. Congratulations. Pipes and mirrors. That's about it.

Where should I get bar end mirrors? Do any of you have a preferred vendor?

Re: Done Deal, Picked Up, Picture to Prove It! Help me Build

I honestly didn't notice any vast improvements from using the SBN pipes prior to remap #77 and after. The bike ran ok either way. Still has a few little vibe symptoms to address so I'm going back to Gold Coast on Wed. to get the updated remap. They also took pictures of my oil leak and are going to contact Norton and start getting advice prior to my bringing it in in November so maybe they can get well prepared in advance. They carry Rizomas there, so I may get a set of mirrors on Wed. also. I want traditional, not bar end.

I installed these Rizoma mirrors. I got the tip from Trevor Packer. Here is the link he posted a while ago: https://www.flickr.com/photos/131807205@N02/

Free flowing mufflers are also a good bet, with the accompanying remap. I like the shorties the best but the long ones are good too.

A flyscreen looks cool too, especially the handprinted one with "Norton" and gold pinstriping on it.

Also you should install the oil breather vent recommended by Richard Coote so you won't start leaking oil like many bikes do.

You could also add some carbonfibre bling such as a hugger and chain guard.

All that plus the bike should put you in the poorhouse!!!! :D

I am thinking I will gut the stock exhaust of the cat and see how it sounds and performs. Just a thought and have done that to a few bikes in past. Also plan to wrap the header tonight and see how that looks before starting it and letting it cure. I know some of you are cringing and say WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS BLEEPING IDIOT.

I am not a big fan of wrapped headers, but it might look good. Make sure you put up some pictures after doing it

OK now I am being a chicken to wrap the pipes. Thinking maybe I want to keep all the chrome. No, I don't want to see the blue pipes spotted up so I will wrap them. Nah, I won't it will look ricky racer and after all this is a Norton and should look like the hand built machine it is. But, all chrome and I look like every other Norton, however I have never seen a Norton on the road... ever. Oh boy I am such an indecisive one tonight. So I guess I will find some mirrors and different helmet and boots.

Roofus. Those are exactly the mirrors I want. Thanks for posting that. Did the mount come with an assortment of screws or did you need to no the diameter and thread ahead of time?

Don't do it Paul. Its not the right bike to look good with wrapped headers at all.

It would be akin to bolting a cheap, oversized tail pipe trim on an Aston Martin.

Your bike is individual as standard. There are many tasteful ways to make it more so. Phoney 'tuning' like wrapped headers ain't one of them!

All only IMHO of course.

You need adaptors, also available from Rizoma.

Re: Done Deal, Picked Up, Picture to Prove It! Help me Build

Wrapping the pipes holds moisture and makes them rust. Please please don't do it to that bike.

Re: Done Deal, Picked Up, Picture to Prove It! Help me Build

Exhaust wrapping is suitable for bobbers/rat cycles where the owner is trying to make a different kind of statement.
IMHO these 961's have a more elegant styling which is not really compatable with the rat concept.

But to each his own.

Re: Done Deal, Picked Up, Picture to Prove It! Help me Build

Thanks for the adapter numbers, Roofus. Much obliged.

Re: Done Deal, Picked Up, Picture to Prove It! Help me Build

OK so I picked up black pipe wrap and safety wire to wrap the pipes BUT I was not able to do it. No you guys did not sway me it was just something I could not do. However the headers are spotted up and now need to figure out how to get them shiny.

You guys are correct that the 961 should not be wrapped. :D

Re: Done Deal, Picked Up, Picture to Prove It! Help me Build

Hi Guys,

Just so you know, all of our exhaust systems are made entirely from stainless steel (the headers, cats and silencers) and have been for just over a year now. The cat sections have always been stainless. Some of the previous bikes out there have chrome plated steel headers and silenscers. Obviously there is nothing wrong with the older chrome systems, but if anyone does want to purchase a full stainless system or even parts of the system then please get in touch with your local dealer.

Re: Done Deal, Picked Up, Picture to Prove It! Help me Build

Hello Simon , Can we get the Norton Motad decat x-pipe and short /loud mufflers from the USA dealers now ? When I first attempted this I was told that the (off road only) exhaust systems were not available in the USA. Do you mind checking into this again ? Also , 961 parts are VERY hard to get here. I am still waiting for a clutch lever and a rocker cover gasket to do a head re-torque. Its been more than 3 months since I ordered. Is there any explanation that you could tell us. ? Thanks, Tony.

Re: Done Deal, Picked Up, Picture to Prove It! Help me Build

Hi Tony

Every so sorry to hear about your parts request, could you please PM me the details of the situation, which dealer you spoke with, if the parts were a warranty request or a sales order request, your VIN etc etc and I will ensure our man in the warranty department chases it up and gets you the parts straight away.

With regards to the exhaust systems all I can officially say at the moment is you need to contact your local dealer to chase this up.

Thanks

Simon
