I just fitted Don's one-piece rear axle. http://www.tritonmotorcycleparts.com/297620485/product/515653/norton-axles?catid=146825
Had minor problems because the bike had a wider (17.5mm vs 16mm) double row bearing in the drum than OEM.
Solution - machine his spacer (replacement for dummy axle) shorter by 2.4mm.
Other than that, I'm a fan!
The axle, coming in from the left, makes rear wheel fitment soooo much easier.
The reason I changed was to reduce potential for axle failure (rare I know - but possible)
The hindsight bonus was the ease of fitment of wheel.
I'll be doing the same for my two featherbeds.
Cheers

I have Don’s axle with his rear Cush hub. It all stainless apart from the spacer. Not a big deal.
I have bought a stainless spacer but it is a few millimetres longer so another job that might need tweaking. The wheel is being built at the moment so soon will be test fitting.
Love all of Don’s parts I’ve bought.

When fitted with a one piece axle do you split the chain and remove the whole wheel/brake/sprocket as an assembly, or do you still just pull the wheel off the brake drum and remover only the wheel?

I withdraw the spindle from the left such that it still supports the drum / sprocket. So the QD function of the wheel kinda still works, albeit a bit more wobbly !

I bought his cush drive hub mostly so I could pull the hub and brake drum apart in the field without a garage full of tools to hand. Never could believe that no cush or the later tiny cush was doing the gearbox and transmission any good.

Rob,

I have purchased Don’s axles. (Front and rear).

Did you replace the felts or leave them out?
Thanks, sounds like a plan.

I have also bought the single piece axle and there is a bearing in the kit - which bearing does this replace?

Hmmm... there was no bearing in my kit.
What number is on it?
If it's 4203 and 16mm wide then it fits in the drum.
Cheers

When I got mine,it went into the brake drum

Have it still into the box, but I like the cush drive of Don's version..

Problem I have is the internal diameter of the supplied bearing is bigger than the axle diameter. i asked Don and he said it would be obvious but my bike was missing the correct rear wheel so I’m piecing this together. Maybe he sent the wrong bearing.

What is the number stamped/etched into the outer race?

The stock 4203 bearing in the brake drum is 40 mm OD 17 mm ID and 16 mm wide.
It would normally have a stepped insert spacer with a 17 mm spigot to fit into that bearing to accommodate the smaller OD axle that screws into the dummy axle.

I would assume these one piece axles accommodate that same need with either the stock spacer used or comes with a new one. (The stepped reduction insert spacer which sets the wheel to the drum distance)

The picture of the axles look to have a spigot ed spacer included to suit the 4203 bearing's ID .

None of the parts supplied fits into the internal diameter of the bearing so I’m probably going to go with the stock setup. If anybody wants the single piece assembly at a knock down price let me know.

The part on Rob's axle picture link must replace the dummy axle only (spacer) and you use the stock stepped spacer in the bearing.

Dummy axle replacement spacer.

The bearing in the drum would need to be removed to install that spacer (or the dummy axle) having that outer flange (on both) which can only be installed from the bearing side and semi captivates it in the drum.
