Dominator final drive chain is listed as 5/8 X 1/4 (pre-'66) in my books, later and Commando as 5/8 X 3/8

Is it for clearance reasons? I find this perplexing because they both use the same chain ( 530).
The first one is listed on the Slimline page and the last one for a Commando.

I have old catalogues from RGM and N*rvil.... Both used to list 1/4" and 3/8" chains though RGM's website no longer lists the former...

Pretty certain, based on owning '62 and '64 slimline dommies, Norton used the 1/4 chain until '64 and then changed for '65. I think in '64 they added the key lock to the top yoke and then in '65 went to 3/8 chain. "Incremental development." However, probably because the company (AMC) was in financial distress, specific component changeover dates are probably pretty meaningless.I have old catalogues from RGM and N*rvil.... The rear drum did not look to have any different teeth size than commando so I would guess it is already 3/8.
What about instead of increasing the size of the gearbox sprocket, increase the size of the engine sprocket. I see they come also in 20-21T range?
Wouldn’t that give a similar gearing up effect while being a little easier to change out?

I am surprised nobody has said anything about changing the engine sprocket for a larger one. I think stock is 19t.
It was easier and therefore was probably done more often than changing the gearbox sprocket back when the bikes were new.
