The later hotrod version, the 88ss had the same inlet valve as the 650ss, according to my parts book. That would be the 1.41" size.
I don't have info on the basic 88 model. If memory serves it had the smaller inlet size as did the 99 (600cc)
Later 88s had the larger valves and the head is recognised as such as it will have the extra aluminium decoration between the rocker spindles. My friends 1960 slimline is so equipped.
Pretty full detail of this in Technical on the Atlantic Green website with some nice pieces.
1960 on 88/99 had “picket fence” heads with 1.4 intakes. My ‘59 600 has a non-picket fence head with 1.4 intakes and Dave’s website shows an earlier head from a 99 with the same. 1962 and later 88ss used the same head as the 650.
This customer says his 500 has 1-5/16" intake and exhaust valves. The valves are approx 3.9" long overall. If I send him Commando ex valves for both the intake and exhaust with 4.015" overall length I will have to shorten the pushrods approx .110" (note that Commando used shorter pushrods than the Atlas because the Commando went to longer valves and better geometry).
He's overseas and there is a language barrier. I don't want to send him the wrong parts.
He claims his pushrod lengths are 7.76 in. and 6.95 ex. Can anyone confirm this intake pushrod length? It seems short.
