Hi Guys,

Happy new year!

A mate of mine has a derbi motorbike, see pic attached.

The gear shift has a type of rearset setup, there is a small round tapered splined shaft which has broken & is not available new or used! See pic attached

Two questions:

1 Could the shaft be repaired/welded? it would be a very fine precise weld!!

It’s 12mm diameter & 49mm long

2 could a new shaft be made at reasonable cost? It has ‘normal’ splines on one end & tapered splines on the other

Any help/advice appreciated

Thanks
Kevin

Hi click, long time no hear. How's that 880 going?

Personally I think that shaft is fixable. I'd align the broken bits, then press a rod into it and take it to somebody that TIG welds. However, I think it could also be brazed as long as the filler is not over applied.

Sláinte & Happy New Year !

Hi cliffa,

880 is going really well, managed to get some more miles on it during the summer.

Really appreciate the reply, the mate is in the process of tracking down a good tig welder.

Athbhliain faoi mhaise duit! (HAPPY NEW YEAR!)

The mate, believe it or not, has a neighbour who is a pro. tig welder!

I think he did a very neat job considering it's quite small.

Hopefully it will last!

That's a very neat weld !! I have to say I've never seen a spline like that before. Is it to stop some side load or something?

And actually I've never seen a Derbi like that either. I thought that brand was long gone. Is it Chinese now like so may other resurrected brands?

Hi Cliffa,

The tapered end fits into the gearshift lever and a bolt locks it in place. (see pic attached)

The shaft is like a spacer shaft which allows it to go through the footrest hanger & attach to a linkage system which eventually links with the gearshift shaft coming from the engine.

It's quite a complicated setup and I referred to it like a rearset setup you might have on a Norton with linkages & such allowing the footpags to be repositioned.

I don't know a lot about the Derbi brand, as far as I know it's a Spanish company owned at the moment by Piaggio. I think they are now made in Italy.

At one stage I think Aprilia had ownership over the Derbi brand & produced some interesting motorbikes.

The Derbi Mulhacen, the mate has, as far as I know is still being produced, it uses a Yamaha XT660 engine, it's the biggest cc bike Derbi have made.

Here endeth my knowledge of Derbi:)
