We had a big soiree at Danny Smiths place today, most of the Vancouver Vintage Motorcycle crowd was hobbling around there.
First up was his Golden Flash Restoration. This was restored from a very disgusting looking collection of boxes said to contain an A10. What it didn't have Danny made for it. His first motorcycle was a Plunger Golden Flash so he has fond memories of that and intends to ride this one quite a lot.

Next up was his 1913 Minneapolis recreation. Someone gave Dan a 1913 Spacke Twin engine so he decided to build a Minneapolis motorcycle from it. This Spacke was thought to have been last used to run a wringer washer. However it is the same as the engine used on a Minneapolis and half a dozen other brands. The Carb was missing but Dan found someone in California who was willing to lend him the correct Schebler Carb for a week or so during which time Dan made the copy you see in the photo. He also made the rest of the bike and, of course, renewed everything from crankpin out.
But today was not the day for startup of the Minneapolis, the roller starter did not have quite enough oomph to do it. We did hear some combustion sounds so it will likely go at the next startup party.

The last bike to try was Dan's Velocette Roarer recreation. There was only one Roarer built by Veloce it is still in existence. The Rhodes family in the UK have it and do parade it at places like Good wood now and then.
For this project, Dan started with nothing more than a large sheet of paper and his drafting board. Once the drawings were done, he started making parts. This bike is very complex, it is shaft driven and Supercharged.

Once an extra battery was added to the starter, the Roarer fired right up. It ain't called "The Roarer" for nothing, my ears are still ringing!

That Deluxe engined beastie is pretty special, and that Roarer is just amazing.
No reflection on any /anyones friends, but VERY few could ever do that......

Can I book a ride on the Roarer sometime !?!
If no part of it is original, it can be ridden like it was meant to be.
And being all modern materials, is quite possibly stronger than it originally would have been. (?).

That Roarer is amazing. Congratulations to Dan for his work. Such a shame that Velocette went the way that they did, any chance of a Roarer video clip??
cheers

Yes, I did get a clip of the Roarer startup. Will load it onto YouTube this evening and post it here.

I am fortunate to know Dan. Any time I have a machining question he answers my call or email and always has a great method to pass along.

Almost everything on the Roarer (other than tires and rims etc) was made in Dan's 600 sq foot basement workshop.
It is laden with machinery and tools.
He has a 27" swing lathe in there that is only 24" between centres. It was much longer however he cut the bed off in order to get it into his basement. The big swing is essential but length along the bed is not needed for motorcycle work, which is all he is interested in doing.

Thanks for posting Glen the pics are great and Dan does some nice work, I love playing with my lathe and milling machine but building a complete bike is way out of my hands, but working in the shed gets me away from the problems of the world and thats where the beer fridge is and the wife don't understand why, life is great when motorcycles are involved.

All beautiful bikes. Such talent!

Re: Danny Smith-4 years in the basement working, 3 bike star

Just out of sheer curiousity, did he estimate a cost of building that Roarer ?

Re: Danny Smith-4 years in the basement working, 3 bike star

I never asked but it won't be much. He would have purchased the tires, rims and spokes but pretty well everything else was whittled out of raw materials.
He makes the moulds from scraps of particle board. I gave him a bunch of offcuts several motorcycles ago.
He pays the foundry something for their casting work, but that is a pretty low cost, I think $150 for a set of cases.

He does all of the painting, chroming, heat treating, gear cutting , crank grinding etc right there in the basement.

Re: Danny Smith-4 years in the basement working, 3 bike star

So at a nominal say $50 per hour, how much would I have to pay to get one ??

Re: Danny Smith-4 years in the basement working, 3 bike star

Good question. I believe he was about 18 months on the Roarer so that would translate to quite a lot of money at 40 hours per week, which he probably averaged. No more than a new Godet Egli Vincent I suppose and those are a lot less challenging to build. Essentially they are assembled by Godet's shop from brought in ready made parts, whereas Danny actually makes each part.
He could do the next Roarer a lot quicker as well, the drawings are already done plus he will have all of the setups memorized.
But he is already done with the Roarer and onto the next project (NSU of some sort)

Near anyone can do that though, given deep enough pockets and a zest for jigsaw puzzles. ?
A while back, a german magazine built a new old Bimmer from spares, just to prove it could be done.
The office girl did most of the organising, and assembly ?

NSU eh ?
The little dohc twin GP racer, the giant killer of its era (early 1950s) perhaps ?
Not available for love nor money to joe public though.
A bigger banger version of that would have seriously shaken up the 500 GP class,
a decade or more before the oriental invasion...

The organized chaos of Dan's tiny workshop. He knows where everything is. He even had two bottles of my favourite brand beer stuck behind the automatic washer, just for the occasion. Covered in machine shop grit of course!
