Customizing your mc may become illegal in Britain

I saw a note recently that bikes had failed their NZ WOF check because bar risers had been fitted, not high bars just the clamps. A low volume cert was requested!!!

I’d bet my bottom dollar that noise is at the root of this. Some aftermarket pipes are just hideously noisy these days.

I can easily imagine that a none motorcyclist living near a motorcycle gathering hot spot would be emailing their MP every weekend !

I was surprised that my cNw bike passed, given that I knew the separation between indicators did not pass Australian Standards.
But, if they bring new rules into Australia to get those offensively noisy Harly's off the road - I say - bring it on!!
Anti-social wankers anyway! Riders of all other makes generally acknowledge a "nod", but not them. Either they're on an upper level (in their mind) - or they're too slow/stupid to process riding a bike and relate to other road users.
My guess is... BOTH

Emissions is the reason given, ie your bike is certified to CAT6 and as soon as its off the showroom floor new silencers are fitted and CAT6 is out the window. If this is the real reason then it will not be retrospective, if its not then it will be retrospective to pre CAT6. Cannot find out if its retrospective or not.

Yes some Harleys are offensively noisy for sure, but here in the U.K. the bigger scourge is big sports bikes. Their high pitched wail seems to carry further for longer and there’s just a lot more of them.

The police "used to" pull over and apply defective vehicle notices for very noisy things. No more?
Seems to be a thing of the past.
Surely some smart youngster can come up with "Noise Cam"?

We live in the city center and have a summerhouse up on the North Coast. In both places, it's the very loud, very slow harlys and the wanna-be parleys that are the most offensive.
When you get a group of 5-10 of these pulling up at the takeaway shop at the harbour, it's so noisy it's almost painful. Makes me embarrassed to admit to being a motorcyclist really. The attitude of the owners was almost as bad - as if they were trying to behave according to a really bad film script about the ruff & tuff biker boys....

I live in the States and there is zero chance of that happening here. The cops ride Harleys!

When I lived in Oakland 25 years ago, I pulled up next to a row of bikes on a hotted up Honda CB350 K4 (admittedly with open megas) and a cop that was there on his Harley told me my bike was pretty loud. I told him that it probably couldn't be heard above his Harley, at which point he fired his up, and me mine, and sure enough. Turns out a 1200cc open piped bike is louder than a 350cc open piped bike! We both laughed and he went on his way, and me on mine.

Good times are had where a loud bike is the least of the coppers' problems.

Back when my '03 Fatboy was brand new factory stock, a Los Angeles cop pulls up next to me and says " You do know it's illegal to ride a Harley with stock exhaust don't you?"

As of tonight, I cannot ride my 2006 Scrambler to work in London, which is within the new ULEZ. Or at least, not without paying a high charge as it isnt Eurosomethingorother. So it seems likely it is to do with emissions as much as noise.

But I could ride my Bonneville or Commando into London as they are both registered as 'classics'.

If you were an MP you could add it to your expenses...

Try contacting triumph to see if you can get an exemption IE it runs clean enough to meet whatever euro it's meant to be
My mate has just done that on his 2002 hinkley Bonneville
Cost £70 I believe
Worth looking into

I am more inclined to think never going to London again would be preferable. A quick blast to the Ace Cafe late Saturday afternoon ended up being a crawl through the traffic.
