So why are domestic pets excluded as a source of risk?

Domestic pets don't roam around the forest getting bitten by bats and some are just not viable carriers for the virus.

Bat bites animal(s), animal gets virus, animal gets caught and thrown in with a bunch of other animals. Animal gets chopped, ground up in the blood of other animals, thrown into a filthy market, mixed with other carcasses and sold.

Shame they didn't shut these markets down 20 years ago as promised...

Completely Agree!!!!!!!!

I believe they did shut the markets down , then as can happen ,the law wasn’t enforced and things gradually returned to the good old days ... all cultures are different and in some places eating like pre-historic man is a symbol of status ... in this case the world’s population will decrease by 1%+ as a result of some freakish circumstances ... and 9 months from now there will be a mini-baby boom , can’t wait to hear the handle the media puts on it , Actually should have said , hope I get to see/hear the name the media give the coming birth boom ...

Prepare for Covid 20 next year. I doubt they will change the habits of a lifetime. Mind you it could originate in the USA , those chicken farms are gross.

Having worked once as an egg collector at one of those facilities, I can attest to how foul they are.

I worked in a chicken processing plant in Russia once. That was truly, truly, awful. After a plant tour through the bowls of the place, covered in dropped blood and various chicken detritus, they escorted us to the board room for a lunch for... as much chicken as we could eat. Funnily enough, none of us were hungry.

But, on a serious note, sometime you see stuff that on some deep level, just seems wrong, like we’re playing with and taunting Mother Nature. And, as unscientific as it may be to say so, these virus mutations just seem to me to be the result of such actions.

These markets have been around for centuries , surely , so why now is it a problem ? Do bats not bite dogs and cats aka pets?

problem is our transportation has improved 100 fold , from 4 centuries ago , add to that life styles of the rich and famous , plus seat sales for the mob underneath ..... nothing good can come from such links , like mixing 4 hundred year old food prep standards and today's physical mobility ..... prolly throw in some corruption to grease the wheels as well .....

Sure they do. In this particular case, with this particular bat, this particular animal (Pangolin) and this particular virus it just so happened to be the perfect combination. That, paired with the recent rise of the Chinese middle class and increased intercontinental travel resulted in a pandemic situation. That's how I understand it.

As China becomes a more connected society, small outbreaks in regional communities now have global outbreak potential.

Plus cats and dogs tend to live in close proximity to human settlements, further from wild bat/animal populations. They eat them too.

Note these markets are also very common in other countries like Thailand, Indonesia etc. No stories of them being closed yet.

We had the bird flu some years back and despite being in the EU Poland supplied us with some very poor quality meat from some disgusting farms.

Some cultures do have really foul unsanitary & disgusting eating habits, but please do not include shellfish in these. Nature as a whole is pretty damned clean and takes care of itself. People and their habits tend to be filthy even by primate standards. Chinese are particularly filthy after reading of the market for human fetuses to be served as food. Plain disgusting savagery. Abomination comes to mind & sand becoming glass.

Well , up here in Nova Scotia Mother Nature provides us with the occasional “red tide” which can make shellfish very harmful , causes a rare neurological thing that wipes out short term memory in humans forever , that is if you survive the coma .... She also provides us with algal blooms in our fresh water lakes , the “blue” is particularly dangerous to just ‘bout anything that breaths oxygen .... just sayin’ ... without mentioning the naturally occurring “sour gas “ vents in oil bearing areas out in western Canada and elsewhere .... I say good to be wary of Mother Nature at all times , she can bite you !

Jeffery Dalmer ate folks, guess that makes Americans filthy by your standards....

I have to wonder if some employee of the Wuhan bio weapons laboratory didn’t sell some test animals out the back door to the wet market that's down the street ?

Maybe the guy charged with incinerating lab test animals saw an opportunity to make a few yuan. No audit trail - “Did i incinerate those bats? Oh, yes sir, I certainly did.; why, here’s my log entry showing that they were burnt.”

An animal by anyone's at least. We to have the red tides and have to be careful. Some years one can't touch area oysters at all, also runoff from farming sometimes ruins things.
