I take full responsibility for my smoking habit/addiction , surprisingly I still very much enjoy this activity ... guess when I started even my sport coaches where smokers in fact my hockey coach for 2 yrs used to fire up on the ice ... he still lives ! .... back to the media , bottom line in general media is in a “feeding frenzy” and seems they will print/broadcast/post , anything to get an edge on competition ....
I recall Guy Lafleur used to smoke several packs a day then go out and score multiple goals per night at The Forum in Montreal for "Les Gloriuex"!

One could receive more accurate news from Josef Goebbels than any of our news sources I've come to believe. We no longer have reporting... I think of it as cheerleading to work the crowd up for one side or the other.

Agreed, this is the unfortunate result of the 24/7 news cycle and corporate media.

There are still reliable news sources out there.

In general people need to use their brains more and their mouths less.

That's what happens when news organizations are made focus on turning a buck instead of doing actual news gathering.

I hear the same tired old, “It’s the media’s fault” that I heard during Watergate. You right wingers are just singing from the same old hymnal book when your see your boy in the wrong. There are some who still think the only thing Nixon did wrong was to not burn the tapes. I see the same kind of complaint from Trump’s supporters . ‘IT’S THE MEDIA’.

With the media, many things are exercises in manipulation. Poll results affect subsequent polls when helped by the media. People such as Murdoch are mainly in business for their own welfare - not 'for the common good'. In most western countries, Murdoch decides who gets elected. A politician does not need the media on side to win, but they cannot win if the media are against them. The major problem is that the public never knows whether they are looking at the over-world or the underworld. I am just reading a book about Graham Richardson who was a power-broker in the Australian Labor Party. I find it hilarious,- but that is just me. The other side of politics are just as bad.

People think smokers die from lung cancer, which is quite slow. However most smokers die from lung infections - pneumonia. If you smoke while coronavirus is around, you will probably get there a bit quicker than others. My friend is dying from lung cancer, so is on oxygen. If he gets a virus, he will be gone - opportunistic pneumonia will kill him.

I was a mediocre cyclist , could do 120 miles a day at pretty good speed , recovery was 12 beer the next day though haha! ... the hockey was pretty decent as teenager then slowly faded until at age 50 hung up skates ... still suffer no side affects from filthy habit but I accept it is killing me on the sly .... .... back to media ,even our National broadcaster in Radio & Television the fabled CBC has followed the for profit folks .... it just a circle of same news with only the numbers that change , I guess not much to talk about , on the other hand my wife and I watched “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” Sunday night for free , the pay per view folks were passing on some good will , which was nice ... we had serious riots in Halifax when WWII ended , looting, public drinking of looted booze , naked women , fights , fires the works ! .... hope they have enough fore sight to dumb this down gradual when tide turns ... ‘bout all I can think on right now , when these strange days end and what be the “new normal” .... it been a moving target most of my life

Not for me to say, especially in the UK.

It is up to you and your common sense to decide what and who to believe.

There is bias in all news sources. It is your responsibility to think critically and come to an informed conclusion using your own intellect.
It is a problem knowing who to believe
The problem has always been around, news papers during the first world war were full of crap etc
And nowadays we have the internet that seems to have made matters worse
I definitely would not trust the BBC I have seen how they operate so I just don't know

Tornado, have you any information as to why some exposed people seem to present mild cold symptoms and others die? is it just that the Sars-cov-2 isn't converting to Covid-19?

Its just one of those counter-intuitive things that one ofthe worlds greatest alltime athletes was a a heavy smoker. I suspect nowadays more die from passive motoring. Worth pointing out that the studies on smoking and cancer never monitored for other carcinogenic and respiritory hazards which in old technology were very considerable. But yes you are right. I smoked 30 -40a day for nearly 40years but stopped about 14 years ago. Not had pneumonia but had a nasty chest infection last autumn. It cleared. On my 70th I cycled over 100miles in a day round the hills of the aptly named Peak District .

Just to hazard a guess , it might depend on the viral load of the infected
person. If its a low 'dose' then the body's immune system might have a chance,or are you suggesting there is more than one virus sailing under a generic flag of convenience? Could be .

SARS-COV-2 is the virus.

COrona VIrus Disease (COVID) is the disease it causes.

It's very hard to say why symptoms vary person to person (outside of underlying health conditions, etc..etc..) I'd be interested to know why as well.

Could be many reasons. Initial viral loading (high dosage vs limited) for example. Though that would mean second/third exposures to more virus should in principle give more severity...not sure that's been observed.
A more likely scenario...everyone's immune systems are different in subtle but significant ways. We know huge amounts about how mammalian immune systems work, their genetics etc. There is variability in the genes that make up every human being, even identical twins (which are technically "clones" of each other) still show some levels of genetic differences (for example differences can arise after the sperm & egg combine, errors/differences occur everytime a cell divides into two). These genetic differences may affect the final shape of the cell surface proteins found in the lungs which the virus uses to attach & gain entry to inside the cell. There might be differences in how the immune system recognizes or responds to the virus infection. It is the actual response of the immune system that causes the severity degree. The more severe the response, the more fluid builds up in the lungs, the harder it is to breathe etc. The virus doesn't actually kill anyone directly....

There are no known cases of a virus ever wiping out a species of animal. There are always some segments of a population that escape, either by luck of not being in contact or by having an immune response that doesn't do excess harm. The surviving population will be more resilient the next time the virus appears, reducing the overall spread.
Also note that most viruses ultimately evolve in such as way that they no longer cause severe disease. It's much better to keep a low profile, reproduce yourself without being deadly so you ultimately make more progeny long term. Novel viruses are usually the worst offenders because they have not yet mutated into low impact invaders.

I wouldn't know about that, but such a lot just doesn't add up. The Flu like symptoms are devaluing the seriousness of the virus and the wildly differing effects of the virus isn't helping.

I had a tx tonight from one of our directors stating that his brother got coronavirus and was struggling to get out of bed for 3 days with aches and pains, bad headaches and a temp, sounds like mild flu to me so I asked where he was tested. He wasn't, but is convinced he has had the virus and is getting better and that is being told as a fact. I cannot see this helping anyone to stay safe.

It would be good to have some definitive symptoms to go by.
