1964 Continental 2AO - 42 Engine . 42 Cu. In. ( near 700cc ) Alumn. o.h.v. ( theyre 1 1/4 in. 1 in. ex . ) built to Aircraft Standards by a Aircraft Engine Manufactureer .

Continental :

" this motor is rated at 10000 ft at 10 hp for uncle sam,. but at sea level you get 25 to 30 hp " http://www.homebuiltairplanes.com/forum ... 2ao42.html

with all the trash off , theyre quite nice . Forged 180 deg. crank - 2 brg . Worsts the Ex Pipes aim out at the lower outer corners if mounted across the frame . Whateryer complaining about , at $ 400 .

I'm a south Florida boy so these Continentals were definitely a part of confusing me on classifying craft by their engines and use.

Is that in NZ or USA.
A Lycoming flat 6 sounds like it would be a 0-540 ?
Thats 8.8 litres of motor !?

Pity I cant find a picture of a ' bare ' one . With the debri stripped of theyre not unelegant , sorta 2 Cyl V W with pushrods at the top .
Stripped a dead one a few days ago , broken cam - rings rusted to bores - snapped ( cast Iron ) Cam . :( though was a ex trash pile one .

One piece alloy crank case , & alloy wet sump under . Diamond pattern trough bolts - four - heads to case . Trap door at rear for crank egress .

Anyone with a dead Ural , Guzzi , B M or shaft rice burner could be mobile again on the cheap . And have 10 Hp @ 10.000 Feet , if they fit wings .

Forged steel rods & crank , shell big ends , looks like a bit of souping up should get 40 horse . About 50 T - Bird level , for the good old ton up bypass .

Output Shaft / crank end is taper - woodruff key , same as Commando , bar longer tapered length & a notch larger Diameter . Not a heavy engine .
Nice fine pitch fins like a alloy T100 , but looks sand cast , but good sand castings , at that .

Update ; to FONGRI .

speed kills . :x

Fongri ???
You bin on the turps again....

Douglas and BMW are the 2 obvious candidates for flat twins.
The dirt track competition duggie in particular.

But there have been dozens (hundreds?) of flat twin designs over the years.
Doesn't legend have it that the continental airplane motors came from the basement of the Indian factory in Springfield. ?

New Zealand.

It was a over hour engine with the governor removed so it could rev to 3k perhaps,it was in a speedway (dirt) format, very well put together by the look of it.
Was in a magazine article,(Performance Streetbike ?) looked to be somewhat terrifying in the action shots (sideways, very big dust, dirt cloud trailing it)
