Commando rear wheel in Slimline F'bed

Dear All,

Thanks to your prompt and clever support, I've been able to carry out the installation this morning.

Just to recap' and if it may help, here is what I did:
- I used only Commando parts (brake plate / drum / wheel / spacers / shims / spindles ...), not Dommie ones neither a mix of Dommie and C'do parts.
- I installed first the left hand side (dummy spindle, LH spacer, Brake plate and brake drum), then the wheel (no problem at all with the rubbers to push it against the spacer protruding out of the drum bearing), the speedo gearbox, the RH spacer and the spindle.
- Once tightened on both sides (starting with the LH), I've been able to check the sprockets alignement (which is OK), the proper operation of the brake and the free rotation of the wheel.
- With the wheel installed on the swing arm like described here above and the swing arm clamped in a vice, I've re-centered the rim which is now aligned with the drum (zero offset) and perfectly centered in the swing arm.

One reason for my problems is that the rim had a 15 mm offset to the right whereas I understand from your comments and pictures that it is normally aligned on the hub center on a Commando wheel.

Merci beaucoup. Enjoy your rides!

When I did my Commando/Featherbed conversion in 1980 I was 22 years old, never built a bike and no experance at all except ridding bikes, I had no access to a machine shop and it was way before the internet thingy, my Commando wheel has been on since day one, I used all the 850 Commando axle and dummy axle, brake drum, everything, the chain runs straight and I get very long life out of my chains the last one has done well over 30,000 miles, I have only replaced the drum/sprocket once in that time and I am still running the orginal wheel bearings that I replaced when building this bike and I have well over 130,000 miles on this 850 Featherbed, yes I had to cut down the spacers and on the brake back plate part that slides in the Featherbed swing arm, all done by my 2 hands, so not bad for 35 years of being built and ridden evryday for most of its life, the tyre sit even on both sides of the swing arm and have never had any problem with this set up in all that time.
I have a spare Wideline swing arm and it is exact same as my swing arm on the Slimline frame that I am building, hope this helps.

I first tried the Commando wheel as standard, but the dummy axle was shorter than a Dommie one and not as much thread was left to put the wheel nut on. There's obviously enough though from your comments. Just shows there's more than one way to do it :)

As you can see in my wheel pics I do run the thick washer on my axle nut as well as on the main axle and the nut still has plenty of thread to do up properly, it is funny how diffrent bikes are never the same, when I brought the Wideline frame in 1979 it didn't have wheels, only a knacked front end, fuel tank, oil tank, battery box and swing arm , thats why I had to use most of my Commando parts for the converstion.

Hi Laurent, yes the Atlas rear wheel offset is not the same as the Commando one ......I had done the same as you , fitting a cdo rear wheel into a slimline , and had to adjust the offset, can give you the measurements tomorrow if you need , I had fit also a Madass one piece rear spindle ..........

Reviving this old thread, So it looks as if this can be done two ways? Can anyone give some measurements as to what offset the wheel would have or measurements of wheel spacers? I am sending out some hubs to have laced up and any help would be nice, Chuck.

My way is to work on the spacer first , then adjust the offset in situ , so in that case , you start with the the right hand first , and the right spacer should be 1.075 (27.3MM°) forthe featherbed instsead of 1" 5/16 (33.6MM) for the cdo , the for the left depends if you use the cdo brake plate (with full rigs !) or the fbed one , then the wheel offset should be centered .
