Hi, Apologises i have read as many emails on this forum but still have yet to make up my mind. I am the proud owner of mk3 Commando and want to improve the braking. At present the bike is undergoing a comprehensive overhaul, with up graded electics , starter, charge circuitry.
I have been looking at the Don Pender twin disc conversion looks a lovely piece of engineering. I must put on record that Don has been very helpful but hasn't been able to put me in touch with anyone in the UK who has purchased his set up. My concerns re his set up are the ridgity of the forks the fixing of the dunstall style mudguard etc. the standard mudguard would have been fantastic as it natural gives bracing. The new Fork bottoms dont have the fixing posts for mudguard , is this because they are sourced from another bike or just an oversight and differcult to cast???
There is also appears to be question mark about the disc floating/ non floater supplied in the kit.
I would be very interested in hearing from members who run his set up.
At present i have modified master cylinder and obtained a AP racing capiler, as orginally i was going down the 12 in floating disc route.

This post is not meant to knock Dons products, i just want a value for money brake upgrade.

Just a couple of points
(i1) the sliders are not sourced from another bike etc,
(2) the discs are full floating not riveted solid, like the sliders they are my own design.

Thanks Don.
re THE FORK BOTTOMS why did you go down the dunstal mudguard route and not the standard mudguard with the fork fixing bosses?

its a long story, I had no intention of doing a twin disc setup, but I was able to reverse the right side slider from my single disc kit to use on the lft which meant turning it around and removing the top fender mount which would of been on the outside, its actually a bit more deeper than that.
the right slider of the twin disc kit retains the upper fender mount for the chrome bulkhead fitting bracket for the brake line.
The fiberglass fender is fairly heavy duty and comes with 4 heavy duty stainless clips. tightened firmly it would give some fork support.

Willy, if you want to retain the stock fender, why not get Don's single disc kit. It is all the brake you could ever need for a 50 -60 HP roadbike, or in fact any roadbike. I installed his single setup on a MK3.
Another disc and caliper just add unnecessary weight, my opinion of course but based on using the brake for a couple of years now.

Sticking my nose in with worntorn opinion, only need of dual disc besides symetric looks is for harsh often repeated heated braking to aviod brake fluid boil but otherwise its more unprung mass on suspenion, more spun inertia to slow and if ya study all the fork braces robustness > they imply fender stays don't brace much but the mud guard. Could help sprinting events by helping the front stay down. Still seeing Don's twin gleamers installed is hard to resist.

I think the offerings of Don are superb. You may also want to check out the super shiny offerings from Matt at CNW.

I went this way (see pic). It is a Pretech 6 pot caliper that fits to the stock disc fork leg and mates with an RGM disc. I used a Brembo master cyl from Matt.

The caliper comes in a colour of your choice, or polished, and costs £260 plus VAT (only payable in EU of course).

Check out http://www.pretech.co.uk/page_1.php?pgenme=home and see pics 167 and 168 (the part number is P805).

Braking performance is more than enough. But the feel and the amount of nice braking power for minimal lever force is what I like about it.

Only negative was it was a PITA to bleed for some reason.

The mudguard is also from Matt, it is very well made (as per all of his stuff) and is nice and sturdy, and does away with the 2 stays and accompanying 8 bolts, 8 nuts and 16 washers!!
