Commando alloy tank group buy

As I recall, the standard tank is very close the the battery and, more importantly, the battery terminals.

I would suggest building in more clearance here to avoid the risk of a short. Also to avoid fatigue from fouling (alloy doesn’t respond well to contact + vibration.

Ditto here.
Even slightly reducing fuel volume is worth the benefit of building sufficient clearance in to avoid battery and wire interferences.

And possibly a 6th. I will need to do some research on shipping costs to NZ.
I currently have a Givi tanklock arrangement on the recessed cap in the plastic tank, would prefer to stay with that on an alloy tank.
Thanks for looking into this.
Both caps will be available, I think the Monza cap maybe a slight on-cost as they have to buy them in.

Just for the record.
I have an alluminium fuel tank fitted to my Norton F1 Sport.
This bike has now done 55.000 miles and the only damage done was a crack in a mounting bracket at the rear caused by overzealous tightening of a ratchet strap securing the bike on numerous ferries over the years.
I now use the method the Auto Zug guys use when fastening the bike to the train.
I also use my own straps for securing bike.
Any bike not just my Norton’s.
please tell us more about Zug method!

Really?
Have you read the thread??
Go back and read it again, very very slowly, and you will see where we are up to.
Love And kisses

I'm going to pull everything together we have discussed so far and speak to them Monday or Tuesday next week then I will provide an update have a good weekend guys.

What will it look like ? Any drawings to show us ? Thanks.

Tony,

A reasonable facsimile

Good Question, I'm guessing the alloy tanks that Norton buy in are also not an exact replica of the plastic tank. For now I'd assume they will be a damn close representation but I'll clarify about manufacturing tolerances once I've collected a few more questions. As to visible undressed welds I'm assuming the only one might be at the front around the oil filler, again, I'll clarify. Once I share the website most things will be clearer.

Ferreteer,
Here you are. Several photos of the prototypes I acquired from Kenny Dreer. I'm not sure these are as good as the photos Voodoo sent in, but I really think he was just showing off (lol). Let me know if I can be any help.
Thanks, Charlie

wasn’t showing off. But damn, I’d love to have these pieces you’ve posted. Very nice!

Hello Ferreteer , Ok , Good . So you will try and get the same look as the original Norton tank. Why not try to find a local Norton 961 and use the real thing ? There may be some guys that have a bad plastic tank for you to use. Actually there may be some forum members in England that have replaced leaking tanks , I hope they will respond .

Guys a member has pmd me to offer a leaking tank as a sample. This is great news but will require international postage. If anyone is UK based it would make things a lot simpler give me a shout.

please tell us more about Zug method!
When you use the Moto Rail Auto Zug (German) or Auto Slapper, meaning sleeper,
Dutch. The method they use is to have four short straps which fasten to the frame at the rear & two fasten to the bottom of the yokes, the the ratchet straps pull the bike down unlike the ferries which put one strap over the seat then pull it down, this can cause all sorts of damage to seats brackets etc.as you can imagine. The Moto rail used to go from Den Bosch in Holland to Verona or Genoa in Italy.Ride there train home to save time when I was working.

Ok guys update after my conversation with the manufacturers.

The accuracy of the shape will be as close as they can get it but as I said before even the note alloy tank isn't the same shape as the plastic tank. A mould is taken from an actual tank and this is used to create male and female press tools. Each tool has the ability to stamp out a section of the tank. The panels are then welded together using oxy acetylene and the filler rod is actually cut from the same aluminium sheet as used in the tank construction. The manufacturers say this gives a superior weld as opposed to Tig. This is important because the exact same metal is used as filler which means no joint is visible if the weld is cosmetically dressed mid panel. TIG welding invariably uses a different alloy rod to the base sheet and even if polished perfectly the weld can still be seen as a different colour. This manufacturer only uses Tig to weld in the 15 ml blind tapped plate for the fuel pump.

Polished finish will be the standard finish but brushed finish is available as an alternative spec.

They are happy to stamp with wonderful exclusive serial numbers as one member requested.

Are threaded boss and Monza filler cap will now be be the standard and a recess for the standard plastic tank filler cap will now be an option.

All tanks are pressure tested underwater. Please note for European/German buyers tanks are not TuV tested.

They require a tank from which to take moulds. As I said before I have been kindly offered a tank from a European member. An offer which I will gladly take up unless someone has a tank spare in the UK?

They also require a bike for at least a couple of days to ensure correct clearances around the flux capacitor and interositer etc.

It is envisaged that the project time from commencement to the first complete tank will be 3 months.

May I suggest that a 25% deposit would be reasonable in order to to fund tooling development costs and also to separate the wheat from the chaff among members.

I know some members have already posted their interest in thread and by p.m. but can I ask you to formally state your interest in the post below by putting your forum name against number.

As soon as we get to 6 names I will publish the manufacturers details and we can all have a look at their products and and progress from there.

Any other questions just shout.

I am interested in purchasing an alloy Norton 916 tank based on the information so far within this group buy thread.
