Hello all,

I recently did a bit of work on my 1970 Norton 750 Commando; new tank, new cylinder head, new oil lines, clutch cable, and new clutch plates.

I am running into an issue with the clutch. When I first installed everything, the clutch was far too tight, (two hands were required to pull), so I backed out the adjustment. The clutch was still stiff, but I was able to pull it. However, when I clicked it into gear, the bike immediately died. I tried to find a spot between the two, but no matter what I do it seems to be off. The clutch is either too heavy or does not engage.

Any pointers would be welcomed. This is my first Brit bike and there has been a learning curve through the build.

Make sure the 'actuator' in the gearbox is installed correctly on the cable. There's plenty of threads about this, it's the thing your clutch cable attaches to right inside the gearbox, you can see it in the inspection hole.

Make sure the 'actuator' in the gearbox is installed correctly on the cable.

The actuator drops when the cable is removed, unless you reposition it correctly the clutch becomes very hard to operate.

Thank you, I’m pretty sure the actuator was set correctly, but I’m going to double check. Will post with results.

The actuator was fine, set correctly. I have a feeling the plates weren’t correct. I took the plates out and reset them. I then adjusted the clutch and it grabs perfectly, good feel to it.

Thanks for the tips either way!
