Thought Id treat the old girl to some new steel plates as the old ones had sat in water and had some rust marks, as did the thick outer plate [PO parked the bike under a drainpipe I think...] - but the teeth of the new plain clutch plates and the pressure plate all had to be filed, quite a tedious process, to get them to move freely in the clutch basket [ the old ones moved freely] - has anyone had experience of this problem?

Surely all Commando clutches have the same dimensions?
Looking at the way the new plates are made [stamped, with slight burrs], compared to the old [machine cut?, maybe Surflex] it looks like a cheaper product. Andover I'm sure wouldnt knowingly sell a plate that would require filing so can anyone shed light on this problem?

Steels have always been stamped.
What brand?
Larger than expected burrs/out of tolerance dimensions are the product of dull dies, or improper die clearance.
You could have a non-standard (pattern/aftermarket) clutch basket out of spec. Pics please.

Never file a steel clutch plate.
The clutch center gets notched and needs to be replaced by a hardened one . That's the most common problem. That and a crushed lock tab washer , and an over tightened clutch nut to crush the soft circlip.

I bought a set of clutch plates for my BSA Gold Star. They didn't fit the clutch center. When I complained to the dealer (Walridge Motors), he contacted the manufacturer in the UK and asked for an explanation. Apparently he was asked: "Doesn't the customer know how to use a file"? By then I had filed them and they worked fine. Kind of annoying.
Never had this problem with my Nortons.
