Clutch drag (again)

The clutch centre was an A.N part from RGM. As I understand it from reading previous posts, the centres only come hardened, when you think about it a soft mild steel one wouldn't last five minutes. As a point of interest the matching "spline" area on the bronze plates were in pretty good condition, perhaps they had been changed more recently.
The seal was from RGM, so I guess thats a Dommi one too, if thats the case I'll just face off the threaded end until it accommodates the pushrod.
I'm still keeping the bike at work at the moment (but yes I did tell the wife I'd bought it!! :) ) until I've made room in the workshop at home for it. even so, I've been able to put a couple of hundred miles on it, just round the local lanes on the Hoo peninsular in my lunch hours. Its got to the point now where the locals in the villages I pass through have got used to the snarl of a Commando passing through "aye up, 'alf past twelve, 'ere 'e comes, Terry on 'is Norton, 'es running five minutes late today".
Nearly time to re - torque the head.

I have been wondering if a seal is necessary if the gearbox is vented.

Hi Terry,

Thanks for the info. I toured around the Hoo Peninsula many years ago, always find the coastal areas far more interesting than inland.

Sounds like you have the Norton well sorted.

All the best

Then for the benefit of other Commando owners, I hope you will at least take the time to make RGM aware that the part-as supplied, does not fit, and is thus useless.
I believe they have already been informed of this, as some of our members have already bought this part (myself included) and found it did not fit, but for whatever reason RGM appear to have chosen to disregard that information and continued selling a part which they must know won't fit a Commando clutch without additional machining.

HI L.A.B.,

I told RGM on the phone & by email, they gave me the impression I was the first to tell them, this was only about 8-9 weeks ago. I did mention that I was asking advice from members on this forum and a few others had also said they had problems with this part, the only response I got was if I sent it back they would turn it down so it would fit!

Maybe we could organise everybody on this board to send them an email informing them that this part does not fit a Commando?

Hi rvich, other posts on this site will all say yes, & I have had absolute proof with mine. The bike had only done about 150 miles since I rebuilt the box, & when I ripped the clutch down this time there was gear oil along the whole length of the pushrod. After those miles thats proof absolute to me.
LAB
The next time I phone RGM (& knowing me that won't be long  ) I'll mention the seal.

The Hoo peninsular is a funny place, I just happen to work there. Much of the coast is remote wildness with freshwater & salting marsh mixed with heavy industry (5 power stations & counting)

Hi Lab
I ordered a clutch oil seal along with other bits for my mark 3 850 in June 2009. They sent the Domi one. On returning it, they said they only do the one clutch body nut with seal fitted so I am surprised they are still sending this out to Commando owners. Alan

I forgot to add that my box has the MK111 vent mod it
Terry

My box has the high-tech hole in the inspection cover. Next time I am in there, I will pull my rod for a look and then report back. Thanks for the info.
