Clutch adjuster locknut

The locknut on the clutch adjuster screw is so tight I cannot undo it. I don't want to take the primary cover off if I can avoid it, so has anyone got any ideas to stop the clutch turning as I try to undo it? Its a 1974 850.

Put it gear, step on the brake.

That's the way. If really stuck then pull the cover (easy). Jam a chunk of soft wood into the chain.

use the above and use a long box wrench and smack it with a length of pipe.

Air or electric impact driver usually works in combination with the rear brake.

The diaphragm spring will just spin in the basket.
Stick a big flat screwdriver in one of the slots to counterhold the locknut.

Could it have been locktite'd? A bit of propane heat would free that up.
When I need the rear brake held on for clutch work, I just jam a bit of 2x4 wood or my trusty rubber mallet onto the brake pedal and under the footrest. Frees up hands for other work.

Bike in 4th gear and an impact gun. Brake won't be needed.
