probably been answered somewhere here but..........did norton clearcoat paint on steel tanks/sidepanels/over decals? what type of paint was used at factory?

maylar thanks i got the metalwork sorted on the india side panels and it was hot and dry here the last couple of days so i put 3 on coats rustoleum auto primer and wet sanded each one then put 5 coats duplicolor gloss black acrylic lacquer and they came out good and some buffing should will make them really shine now on to the fiberlass tank that's due to arrive friday

The pins on my Interstate tank do not look hand done or if they were brushed they used masking. The pins on the side covers look more like hand done. I know all are genuine paint too.

If the Interstate has the wide single stripe (1/4 inch) then you're right. It would either be masked and sprayed or applied with a roller.

Order,
Could you please put up a picture of one of your side panels
Thanks

The OEM MK3 roadster with original paint I have is hand lined with brush, gold on black.
Since the OP mentioned "clear coat", I protected my OEM hand-painted gold stripes with 2K Urethane gloss clear which is gas/alcohol resistant and preserved my original paint before it wasted away.

You're obviously an experienced painter, I see that you wet sanded the old paint to give the clear something to bind to. If you ever need to do that again, I recommend Presta's "Scuff Stuff". It's a paste abrasive equivalent to a 1200 scratch, good enough to ensure adhesion and much easier than sanding.
