You can get any brand of pistons coated with a ceramic thermal barrier on the top to control and inhibit overheating and expansion. You can also coat the skirts with graphite for approx .001" installation clearance which polishes out to a perfect fit on break in (no scuffing). For a few extra bucks you can dot the skirt so you can measure the bare metal of the piston to determine the bore size clearance. Several companies will apply these coatings but line2line is the only one I know that offers the graphite.

I guess the dots make it possible to quickly determine optimum barrel and.taper for a final shape for that slug in that engine

The bare metal dot allows you to measure the actual diameter of the bare metal piston instead of the coating. That way you can set it up as if the coating wasn't there. During breakin the graphite will wear off wherever there is an interference fit - this happens without scuffing. You end up with an ideal perfect fit. Tight clearance with no rocking. This procedure has been working great and once run in you have reduced friction, cooler quieter running and double the piston life.

Jim, any been tested in race/high performance engines over several seasons to check on wear?

Here's a pair of Mats pistons after being raced with the graphite skirt coating.

Yves 920cc with graphite coating on the skirts (on tear down to fix an oil leak before he was injured and his bike was totaled by a car).
