After breaking his leg on a cycle run, Cal Crutchlow plans to race in this weekend’s German GP and is already sixth fastest in practice for the German Grand Prix - two days after breaking his leg while out cycling. Must be as hard as boot nails some of those GP riders!!!

Bicycles are dangerous, and the latest motorcyclist to prove it is LCR Honda rider Cal Crutchlow, who slipped while on a training ride in the short break after last weekend’s Dutch TT, and suffered ligament damage to his right knee and a crack in the tibia bone.

The damage was to the anterior cruciate ligament, he revealed, saying: “we had to have some fluid removed as it was swollen”.

Bizarrely, the Briton, whose seventh at Assen was his best finish since placing on the podium at the opening round in Qatar, wasn’t even riding at the time. On a cobbled road, he had stopped to make adjustments.

“I got off to check the saddle height. Bent to look at the saddle, and my foot slipped from underneath on a cobble.”

He was doubtful about being able to ride, but pushed on to place sixth in FP2.

Broke my fibia and tibia in 3 places , surgeon installed 8” screw to hold things together , lucky no ligament damage .... walking was limited until weight bearing allowed at 6 wks ..... CC is very tough guy !

Is he one of those guys who sticks their foot out as they approach corners - has come to road racing out of motocross ?

I repeat my previous reply, when V.Rossi came back to Moto GP after breaking his leg he stuck his leg out before the corners……for some godforsaken reason, everybody copied him?????!!!!!!

old news

The link I posted must have broken, but it was a blurb from several years ago explaining that Rossi hung his inside leg to drop weight and help stabilize the bike under braking. Of course, everyone copied him because it works. You may note that, foot on he pegs, the rider's weight is all above the front axle height. When they hang the leg, a little weight hangs beneath the axle, lessening the chances of losing the front going in, as young Mr. Marquez demonstrates in the pic I posted.

Dick Mann once cut the cast off a broken leg and qualified for a Flat Track National.

If you haven't seen On Any Sunday (only those from another planet have an excuse), there is filmed evidence.
