For lack of better terms.

I was installing a speedo cable. Just snugged it up on the speedo gearbox. Needed to back it off and the key( the key being a small tab in the housing) that holds the brass threads from turning, snapped off. Picture below. Is there any way to fix this?

Happened to me years ago and vaguely recall cleaning it up and using JB Weld in there ,even forming a new tab. Think like an artiste-sculptor. That was several boxes back ,now I'm ultra carefull with them.

Yes done that. I fixed mine and stopped it rotating by drilling and pinning the brass fitting through the cast body. If you are very careful it is possible to drill through the body and into the brass but stopping short of the drive gear shaft. Degrease the whole assy. very well and use epoxy to retain a short pin (at least 2.5mm/1/10" dia). I placed the hole on the wheel side about 3/16" in from the body end. I did try to tap the brass and duplicate the tab with a stubby screw but that was not successful. Probably would have been if I'd been more careful.

Find the right size set screw and drill a hole and thread it in or do the JB weld. Do you have a junker gear box laying around? Strip it for parts........

Yes, strip gearbox for parts, have been thru 5 . Life goes on. Outer large ring disintegrates from lack of regular lubrication and on and on.
