Hi all,

After looking at the condition of the bike's original electronics, I'm thinking a Boyer powerbox is the way to go.

Anything I need to know - especially where to fit it?

I intend keeping a battery fitted BTW...It's a MkIIa with the plastic airbox; everything bog standard.

good idea!
I fitted a boyer power box and got rid of the zenor diode and the rectifier
I mounted it with duc tape in the battery box facing the rear of the box
this way you hook up the alternator wires coming out of the wiring loom on the rear fender area to the power box
I also left my battery in place like you will
10 happy years now

I fried 3 ( three , THREE ! ) Boyer single fase power boxes , riding in hot weather , over a period of 5 years .
The first one might have been my own fault , because of inadecuate cooling .
5 years warranty is little consolation when you are stranded in the plains of Estremadura ( Spain ) in 40 + deg C .
( luckily I carried a spare )
I think the problem is that the boyer power box incorporates a capacitor , wich gets shorted when overheated .
Podtronics , Sparks , Tympanium .. don't have a capacitor .
I opened one of these boxes and found that the actual box is glued with a dot of silicone in the aluminum housing , giving very poor heat transfer .
Do what you want , but no more power boxes for me !

40+ degrees C!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In England?????????????????
The NORTH of England???????????????

Er...unlikely ;)

Nevertheless, a good point well made - I'll look deeper at the alternatives.

I used several powerboxes on several bikes i build (for friends no i am not a dealer)and sofar had none fail on me .
My first i bought from the late Terry Hobbs from Plymouth because he used them on his scramblers (bsa-triumph)
these were the old style big ones but I have used the more recent small ones with equal good effect
I do use them together with a small battery 4amp and they were 3-phase
btw I do keep a spare black box taped together with the one in use ,complete with all the connections readily made so in case the box blows i got a spare ready .This since 79x100 blew his in Ireland .on our race outfit idem.never needed them....
Perhaps the Fairies like me...

Ive now fitted a boyer power box as my old original electrics were all worn out.
Ive got a 1972 750. I bought a new wiring harness from fair spares a while ago & when I fitted it 2 years ago I found it could only be used with a power box as there were not any connnections for the rectfier, Ballast Resistor etc. which are not needed with the power box.
My electrics are now a lot neater & less complicated & I have a good spark. It starts 1st or 2nd kick from cold.
Ive mounted it behind the battery but with the battery compartment. Here it gets a bit of air flow & ive mounted it with
pre drilled angle iron brackets from a D.I.Y. shop.
Everything works fine for me now.
Cheers Don

Reading through all the replies about the powerbox I see that the Rectifier and Zener's are no longer required but I don't see any mention of the 2MC capacitor, is this still being used on these bikes?
I'm building a JPN replica and following a wiring diagram that still has it in circuit, I've got Boyer ignition but don't have a battery for it yet, any info on what capacity battery to use?

Cheers

Mac.

Modern Boyer Power Boxes have a '2MC' built-in, so the old 2MC should be removed.

For a non-electric start model, a battery of around 9AH is adequate.

i use a 4 (four)amp with good effect .it is only there to make sure you got 12volt for starting as the boyer needs that .otherwise you will be limping for a week....
