Hi I have the earlier boyer system and I have know its not without its problems, so hopefully the forum gurus can maybe suggest more reliable system.

Boyer MicroDigital or Pazon Sure-Fire. The Boyer is easier to set, IMO, but good value either way. You don't need a programmable system for a daily rider or an 88 giga-watt flux capacitor system...

Best.

Cheers thanks for that.

Nothing wrong with the old Boyar mine was on my Norton for 32 years without any problem except when the battery went bad, still going on another Norton but I replaced it with the JH Maggie and its even better and no need for electronics to run it.

Joe Hunt Magneto self contained no need for battery and produce a huge spark.

Ashley, I'm not trying to rain on your parade; your devotion to the Joe Hunt mag your Commando wears is legendary and has always been informative and, clearly, your implementation of the JH mag gives you a solution that justified the cost and the freedom to worry about something else. In that vein we are brothers.

As a stand alone ignition system, independent of the motorcycle's electrical system, a magneto is in a class by itself and a staple for piston driven aircraft; quite an endorsement.

A new magneto, however, is 3 to 4 times more expensive than an entry Boyer or Pazon (others mentioned as well). A mag sticks out so far, when cam driven, that it begs to be knocked off; do owners of accessory mags' (mounted to the timing cover) ever wonder, while in decreasing radius right, how close that mag is to kissing the tarmac? If you answered yes then you have compromised your safety.

Given that a lot of Commandos prowling the roads today have OE wiring harnesses a new mag might be considered cheap insurance for getting home when the electrics melt down. Consider, however, that a new harness and a low-end EI are less expensive than a new mag.

The idea of a mag which doesn't care about battery condition very much appeals to me; if there was a safe place to mount one on a Commando where it would get adequate cooling and have a decent automatic advance I'd buy 2.

Hi
I am running Boyer micro power on my Mk3 I always use the ES new coil ht lead and caps inc in the kit .

Boyer is cheap and reliable. It would be nice if it was easier to fit a conventional magneto to a Commando. These days the magnetos don't drop dead if you drop the bike. And they don't seem to have that trouble with the capacitors. It used to really shit me when I turned up at race meetings having paid all the costs, only to have the motor start missing. The only thing wrong with the Boyer, is you have to maintain the battery. I would not use a Joe Hunt Magneto because I like my Seeley Commando 850 to look as though it has got some sort of authenticity. When I see an old British bike, if it looks as though it has just left the factory, I love it.
All respects to Ashley, A Joe Hunt is probably very reliable, but it is not something I would do. I had to laugh a while back - I went to an historic meeting and saw a 1960s Kawasaki triple two-stroke with a complete engine management system from a go-kart mounted on the top yoke of the forks. Makes me wonder where some peoples' brains are hiding.

What is the difference between price and value ? Perhaps the value in a Commando lies in it's originality and authenticity ?
I hate Velocettes, however I went to a meeting at Phillip Island a few years ago and saw a nut and bolt perfect Clubman's Velo. The bloody thing was to die for.

Shame that those ARD mini magnetos didn’t stick around for longer.

Driven by the cam in the points cover and no more intrusive than the Lucas Rita points cover.

We have one of the ‘modern’ BTH Magnetos on the 650ss - and it’s brilliant.
Electronic advance, and produces enough juice to power a couple of mini coils.

The difference between price and value is largely based on the buyers expectations. For example, If you need a tool to do a specific job and only plan to use it once paying the lowest price gives you value. If you expect the same tool to serve you often than you look for a higher quality and pay more, but you also achieve value.

The "value proposition" is a cornerstone for any capital equipment purchase made. If you need something to last 3 years, why spend more for for something that will last 10 years?

In the US General Motors is, probably, the best at building vehicles where the aim is for all the parts to ware out at, roughly the same time; build a vehicle that will get to the end of the warranty period with minimal claims, let the customer experience the purchase of parts/service, then get to the point where a new vehicle gives the perception of a better "value"

When I build a motorcycle from the ground up I aim for 1) increased reliability 2) increased performance (within my comfort zone) and 3) aesthetics that appeal to me. When your eye sweeps one of my builds it won't fix on any one aspect or part, everything flows.

Best

“Boyer mk4” analog ,no troubles , easy setup , not so sensitive to low battery conditions as earlier types of Boyer, not too costly .... so far so good ....
