I was thinking on modifying my timing cover myself to fix my wet sump problem on my 850 Commando. I have the Norton Tech Digest and it says to basically drill a larger deeper hole in the timing cover and add a spring and ball to stop the wetsump??? Does this work well and is it safe if it is done properly. If so where do you get the ball and spring??? Thanks for any help--Mark C

Not an expensive mod. I believe Rabers in San Jose charges about 125 - 150 bucks, including parts. I am sure you can get it done in any large local geographic market. Mess up the timing cover and the meter starts running.

Many have done this Combat mod, but best way is just drill a few little holes
in the rear of sump passage instead of hoggin it open, to act as a screen to keep big metal pieces out of pump on failures. Also chewed up pieces of metal can become trapped in the internal sump passage and be about impossible to clean once hot cases contracted on cooling. If missed once case hot again can pile up with oil flow to clog return good. Don't have to take out the vertical baffle plate as its only on one case half so oil passes around it easy. This plus a breath can cause a Combats engine fasteners to rust though.

oops, by breather I meant to say PCV valve in breather line. Plenty of posts to search up on that here.

I have done a couple of them. it does quit well but is not the end all as you could get some leakage between the pump halves IF the shafts are loose.I can let my bike set foe a month and cant see ANY drop in the oil tank. it is VERY safe as you are opening it with pressure V suction. I have a drawer full of springs and 1/4 balls as I rebuild auto transmissions but most good hardware stores should have the parts.

How does this mod relate to the mkiii timing cover anti sump plunger and spring?

$70 to have AMR do it and they service the oil pump as well.

I've used them many times, they're fast and reliable.

same thing BUT it is a ball and IMHO works better as the MK3 plunger is known to stick in its bore and the does not.

I had the mod done by AMR awhile back, on the 750 Norton shown in my avatar. The mod helped "slow down" the wet-sumping problem, but did not eliminate it. In fact, it was a little diappointing, as I thought it would cure it. I just need to ride it alot more ... and this year I plan to ! If the snow ever melts that is. March 11,2011 in Norwalk, Ohio ... and we still have snow and miserable cold weather. Hey, I thought we were suffering from global warming ??? :?

Yup. I sent him the oil pump and the timing cover. Of the eight Nortons I've had since 1982, all of them have wet sumped to some degree. I guess I was expecting too much from the mod ??? As I wrote before, it did slow it down, so it was not a wasted effort. :|
