Following on from my earlier thread I’ve been sucked into looking at CCM dual purpose bikes (not the current hipster jobs).

Its the Rotax engined 604 and the Suzuki engined 644 that catch my eye.

Does anyone have experience of these ?

Not the Rotax but our lad built a tracker around the Suzuki mill, bullet proof and good fun.
Ps. I've been called all sorts but hipster? Not on your nelly!

Sorry Nelly!

Yeah the 644 Suzuki lump should be plenty reliable, the 644 Dual Sport looks like a really good bike to me, reliable Suzuki lump with quality suspenders and brakes both ends.

Can’t help but be at least intrigued by those GP450s as well...

You had me at suspenders,......

No experience with the CCM, but lots with the Rotax 604 and 605 engines. It's one of my favorites. It's a lightweight mid-size air-cooled single that's easy to work on and very sturdy and reliable, as long as you don't bump it up into a 676 cc 75 hp monster. The biggest problem with those engines now is getting parts.

This is my current Rotax powered street bike. It weighs 349 lbs/ full wet, and has rwhp in the low 60s. It's a blast to ride.

I bought it new back in 1997, and immediately turned it into a singles class race bike. I converted it back to a street bike in 2007.

Ken, is that an e start version? I have read that the e start can be problematic, is that true?

Engine parts and mods are no problem over here, there’s an outfit called Sportax that seem to be the one stop shop.

CCM did a handsome ‘604 Dual Sport‘ with the Rotax lump. I nearly bought a really nice one earlier this year but pondered too long and missed out!

This short report lists a few known problems, I don't remember having any quality control issues with my 404 but it gives you an idea of what to look for.

Maybe getting a bit on the old side now, but the Armstrong / Harley British army bikes had the Rotax lump as well, and must be pretty strong, so would make a good basis for a green laner.

Not a CCM, but similar. I owned and rode kick start air-cooled Rotax powered ATK 604's as dual sport bikes in the late 1980's early 1990's. They were dirt bikes with a headlight and brake light.

The Rotax motor is easy to work on. Swapping cams is a quick simple job. Ported with the right cam and properly carbureted they are fast enough.

Biggest negative for those ATKs was the dumb countershaft disc brake and chain arrangement, and the company always being on the verge of going out of business. They finally did go out of business. The Rotax motors were great, and the bikes worked well off road though. Oh yeah, kick start was on the left, and you had to kick it with purpose.
