Hi all this time the question is on ATF
I'm currently running Dextron ll ATF in both primary & Gearbox & to be honest the change is as slick as any modern machine out there, and I'm very Happy with it and with not obvious signs of wear (metal particles suspended in oil) or debris on the magnet
My question is Dextron ll the best AFT???
As i know there are a multitude & more of Auto Tranny oils out there
Detron ll
Dextronlll
Dextron V1
Multi vehicle synthetic transmission fluids to name a few.... Etc. Etc....

So which is the best ATF i should be using.... or doesn't it make a difference:)

More FYI than anything but here it goes:

Dexron II and III are obsolete fluids. Allison Transmissions developed their own specification for Dexron III when it became obsolete, as they had a significant population of transmissions in service that were not compatible with Dexron VI. This fluid carries the specification of TES-389, and in non-synthetic (Dexron VI is synthetic).

As far as I know, Dexron III was backward compatible to Dexron II.

As far as running Dexron in a manual transmission, there are other automotive applications that do it, so it is not totally unusual. A lot of newer automotive manuals have syncromesh clutches that require specific friction modifiers to work properly, but the Norton transmission is immune to that.

Which is best? Not my place to say - l like 75w90 synthetic with 25% Lucas Oil Stabilizer. My trans shifts nice too with no ill affects.

For my primary, I run 5 oz of Dexron/Mercon compatible ATF, just enough to keep things wet, but not quickly contaminate my fiber plate clutch.

When I was in high school I had a part time job at the local Sunoco station. in addition to pumping gas, I did lube jobs/oil changes. In those days there were numerous grease zerks to be found on an American automobiles so we had service books to verify the location of grease point as well as recommended fluids.

On differentials and manual transmissions we always did the finger level check. One day I did the level check on an early '60s Plymouth Valiant with a manual transmission.

I was astonished to find red ATF on the end of my finger. Thinking that someone had made a mistake, I checked the service book. Low and behold ATF was specified for that manual transmission.

Oil is a "Fluid" as is air as well as other gases. "Fluids" break down into 2 types, liquids and gases. Both will take the shape of the container and can be transported by pipes or other conduits. The main difference is that liquids can not be compressed while a gas can be compressed.
 
Came into this thread expecting an engine oil discussion, yet we find an ATF discussion. Should we now refer to ATF as ATO or do we have to refer to putting engine fluid in the "fluid" tank?
 
Have at ‘er guys ! … not enough time left on this blue ball for me to get tangled into this one …. as a parting shot Type F in primary , bike manual recommended gear oil in gear box for me always no issues ….

Usual comment for the oppressed minority: No ATF in MkIIIs though, apparently the hydraulic tensioners don't like it.
