Coming down on a cycle one of my enduring memories is the acrid smell of hot brake blocks. An the cries of those who had tried to save a few euros by not buying premium brand brake blocks. Negotiating them going up, the change of direction and inclination is beyond what you ever imagined. At least with a cycle you can chicken out and walk it up.
