Another project emerges from the garage RZ350

What a beauty, always wanted one (still do).

I've owned 7 RD400s, 2 RD350s, and a YDS3; all fun bikes.

BRAAAAAP! It'll help me make it through till sled season...

Always wanted one of those growing up. In Ireland it was called the RD350 but bikers referred to it simply as the "LC". Beautiful machine, its on the list......

I have only ridden one of these once, in the mid-late 80s. My girlfriends uncle used to road race and ice race Ducati singles in upstate NY, and his mate had one he brought by - race ready - no tach no speedo and they let me give it a go as they knew I had had a few bikes and at that time had my Mk3. Was good fun, and a helluva shock when the second peak hit and nearly pulled me off the bike.

A friend of mine has a very nice one of those. He mentioned the carburettors are considerably different to the usual which are used on Yamaha two-strokes. He had trouble getting the jetting right.

re; “He mentioned the carburettors are considerably different to the usual”

do you mean the powerjet carbies :?:

No its not, that was referred to an earlier water cooled 350LC, this bike is the 350YPVS. (Yamaha Power valve system)

Yes correct, getting my abbreviations mixed up. I like the power valve ones better. Red/White combo like the one here is my personal favorite although Yellow seems more popular in the USA.

Yeah, 5,000 is just warming up...

Isn’t there something wrong with that graph if torque and power cross at 7000rpm like that ?

Personally I always preferred the looks of the earlier none powervalve model. Might have something to do with the superfast / super hot girl that rode one with another crowd. Sadly, she was older than me and generally out of my league!

The RZ is the next generation to the RD. The change was towards more torque, so the gearing is probably higher.

The power valve which is being referred to is the shaped bar above the exhaust ports which raises and lowers the height of the port according to revs and throttle position. Moving the top of the port upwards shifts the power band further up the rev range. Lowering it gives more torque. There are power-valve carbs, they have the jet in the bell mouth which works at very high revs.

Yes, there was difference of model codes, in the UK they were known as the RD350 YPVS -only the later ones came with the power jet carbs.

One of the things which is commonly done to second-hand bikes is to renew the mid-range jetting and needles. Any wear takes the edge off the motor as the mixture becomes slightly richer. My friend was able to buy new bits off one of the American forums. As I said, the carbs on the RZ are different from previous RD models - the usual jets are not appropriate
