I've been dealing with Customs for decades, not for importing but simply to clear our passengers into the country. Those agents are totally different in every airport. Most are descent folks but one in particular is terrible. MIA - Miami International go out of their way to be difficult. They have their own rules that are different than anyplace else. One of our pilots got blacklisted simply by stating that company policy was not to leave the aircraft unattended with the doors open. Not all that way but some are simply on a power trip.

I have a common name and as such was getting flagged all the time when entering back from an overseas trip. It really got to me as the worst offender had the same name but different SS, birthday, residence, etc. I finally got a redress number to stop the madness. I still got flagged in MIA despite the redress number. There's nothing you can do but grin and bear it.
