Am I seeing what I think I'm seeing?

OK, moving along with the TR7 rebuild, got the head all ready for new guides, valves etc... Was just planning on a tope end refresh, but when I pulled the barrells and tappets this is what I found. It appears the previous 'builder' mixed up standard and R radius tappets in both intake and exhaust blocks. The tappets themselves appear OK, as do the cam lobes.

Am I seeing what I think I'm seeing?

You sure you didn’t muddle them up?!

the ones with the oil holes on the faces should be in the ex. But your bike may or may not have the oil feed. Also many owners blanked it off when better cams became available.

Its also wise to not take any R markings, or lack of, as fact. Many get re profiled without being marked accordingly.

The best way to compare them is hold them tight together, side by side, then you can see if there is a difference in radius.

The ‘standard’ follower had a 3/4 inch radius. The R follower had a 1 1/8 radius. They were mixed n matched quite extensively by Triumph. But according to my workshop manual (late version) they had standard followers on inlet and exhaust. R followers on the ex is not a bad idea IMHO as the cam is mild. R followers on the inlet would make for a very racey set up, not really ideal for use with a single carb.

Thanks Eddie,

I'm daft in many ways, but no, I didn't mix them up when removing . I compared the profiles, the exhausts are the 1-1/8 spec'd for this early 750, and the intakes are 3/4. I also measured the cam lobe heights and they appear good, and the follower surfaces have less than a 1/32 wear line. I think I'll just have them resurfaced and reinstall correctly.

Benaise!
