Alton Starter Alternator Rectifier

100 % sure. Batterie is in new. I have measured the outcome voltage of Boyer Power Box while motor runs. Nothing! Tested the Boyer at 24AC power supply it works. Even connected to the Batterie and 24V AC gives approx. 14 V DC load . Today it was late and I didn’t finish my work. 200 Watt Podtronics arrived today thanks Dieter Cordes. Tommorow hopefully everything works.
The 200 watt PODtronic is going to upset your TriSpark.... You will get a miss at 3000-4000 rpm engine speeds...

Been there, done that...

Hoepfully I will be one of the poeople who have no issues with that combination! Others also didn't. What a mess!
Hopefully today I will assemble and have a test ride.

Wait -

If the Boyer works when connected to an AC source, it should also work on the motorcycle. You should be looking at the alternator, not the regulator.
Yesterday was a lousy day and late. Hopefully today I find time for start my norton and measure the alternator Voltage outcome.

Open ac voltage from the alternator from my Alton is 20v at 2000rpm and 36v at 4000rpm

I have been using the tri-spark mosfet rectifier and very happy with it, with tri -spark ignition

Yesterday assembled full battery, try to fire up by Alton starter, rattling noise appears.
Was not sure if this was by reason of battery issue I filmed with Slo-Motion the part called Double gear.
I discover that both parts doesn't run simultan while starting the Alton e-start.
Fired up by kick starting and done the measurment of Voltage. 20V in idle, rising up to 25-26V by little accelerating.
So alternator is fine.
By disassembling the ALTON double gear I found the puks been defect.
I have used 3 of them, all are cutted away in direction of the outer ring.
Not sure if I now put all 6 in? I have written to Maxim from Alton and explained the problem, lets see the outcome.
Keep you informed!

I had a Pazon ignition on my 74 850 when I installed my Alton starter. A while later my Pazon failed so I dug around in my spares and found an old dirty Boyer box, so I installed that. No backfire problems, works well.

@Charles Waggett the question was from 8 months ago, and was about regulator/rectifiers.

Telling us that you are using an old Boyer ignition doesn't help anyone!

EDIT: @Anglophile do I need to delete this post too?
This was only 8 months ago, not the full five years.

Hey, your bike, your money, your towing bill...

But if you are running a Mk 3 or older Boyer with an electric start, you are playing Russian Roulette - it is only a matter of time. That is a risk that I am not willing to take with very expensive hardware. Go buy a Mk 4 box. Walridge has them, and they are not expensive.

Hope you have CAA Plus...

My opinion.

not sure if i can add anything here, but FWIW, i'm running the tri-spark ignition with the tri-spark mosfett rectifier, 200W stator assembly, and motobatt MB16U battery - combination seems to work fine although the battery could use an upgrade. my system is happiest using 6 polyethylene iso or shear pins in the interface gear assembly. i'm using a 10mm stock, cut into 12mm long pins. the material is slightly softer than the alton pins (shore 80A vs 95A), so that might account somewhat for needing additional pins, but 6 is my magic number. it took me months to sort through the issues i personally had with the alton system, but now, all is well - knock on wood!

That sounds like a winning combination to me. I am about to upgrade my dad's Alton-equipped 850 with a TriSpark ignition and moffset regulator. He currently has a Mk 4 Boyer and a 200w Podtronic.

You say the battery could use an upgrade? Is it cranking like it should? FWIW - I am really happy with my Shorai 18Ah battery - I am charging it with a potted rectifier and a zener - seems to work just fine.

Just curious - what is the maximum voltage you see with the moffset?

my motobatt seems barely adequate. if i catch the compression stroke just right, it will stop the starter dead in its tracks. then, i have to "bump" the starter button a couple times. i may just have a weak battery. other than that, seems to spin the engine OK. looking at the shorai upgrade (LFX18L1-BS12), but need to check my min/max charging outputs - will post that info later....

That is the Shorai battery I have. I have a voltmeter on my bike to monitor my charging. Idling with the headlight on is the only time that trouble brews - so I flip from the main light to the pilot if I am going to be idling for more than a few seconds. The zener full clamps at about 14.5 volts, so keeps the charge up really well. The battery likes warmer weather, recovers really quickly above 60F.

I just had catastrofic Alton rotor failure Magnets went everywhere. Waiting for a verdict from France

That sounds like the original rotor that Alton initially supplied - for several months. I had two explode - both immediately replaced by alton/shipped at no charge including customs (to Mexico). The third rotor was the new style (early '13) and has been on the bike since then with no issues at all. Hard to imagine the new style could do do that, the construction is totally different.

My second explosion occurred about 50 miles from home but the Shorai battery kept the Trispark firing as normal for that distance. It was a shock looking in there and seeing those little magnets everywhere (TWICE)! So I feel your pain!
