A65 layshaft end float ?

This layshaft has .022 end float. BSA offers 3 different shims to take this up. No info in Haynes manual. Is .022 too much? Norton often is around .044.
 
The Clymer as well as the Chilton manual say movement of the layshaft "should be just perceptible".
No value given.
 
I worked for an old time BSA racer back in ancient times and he insisted on three thou end float.
I never liked that bush approach esp as it was not end fed through the crank. The SRM
mod always seemed appealing.
This is about layshaft endfloat not crankshaft
