A lot of bad feelings arising.

As some people predicted, the US have rejected the UK the extradition request one of its citizens to be charged over the death of Harry Dunn. Just as it becomes the Chinese new year of the Rat. . . .
(And no, I'm not blaming the Chinese!)
On R4 this morning it was stated by the Dunn family lawyer that there have been a number of similar accidents in the UK involving US service personel. What is astonishing is that on base they all drive according to US rules , so not surprising that when off base they forget which side of the road to be on. Surely the US should change this regulation or move their operations to a country that drives on the 'wrong' side of the road.

Google maps show they at least should be driving on the left at Croughton as that's what the road markings show.

Other (somewhat busier) US bases such as Mildenhall clearly show vehicles driving on the left.

US Bases have local employees, service vehicles, contractors and others constantly coming and going so swapping over when entering or leaving would be a nightmare.

Easier than swapping over the UK...

"When actually on a US base in the United Kingdom, such as Croughton, do personnel drive on the left or right of the road?

Ted Malm
Answered Oct 13, 2019
As someone who worked on US Air Force bases in the UK for several years (including RAF Croughton), I can answer this.

These bases are owned by the Ministry of Defence, and US forces are merely tenants. All UK laws are in effect, including road regulations. So there is no transition from left to right when you enter a base."

It has been reported that a new video has emerged on social media of a car being driven on the wrong side of the road outside the RAF base near where Harry Dunn died. The footage was recorded on Thursday, another car was recorded being on the wrong side of the road last month.

When upper heyford was in use, if you stopped your car on the main road through the middle, american squad cars would pull up and give you a choice, move on or be arrested. Owned by mod but classed as a sovereign base. Constant accidents with cars that were as wide as the country lanes. Croughton just up the road so not much has changed.

Arrested for what exactly ? being there ?

Yep, even on the queen's highway. Security zone. We used to chuckle as people in Banbury knew if there was a B52 coming in days before it did. If there was an alert on, the service personnel would be driving round in Noddy suits. Locals constantly moaned about 'all these yanks' then moaned about the local economy when they left. Can't win em all ! But accidents were very frequent, and with the latest trauma, still are apparently. Very very sad that nothing has been learnt.

I still don't see how an MP could arrest a civilian on British roads, What would they have done, locked you up for a few hours and then chucked you out, or would British Police have backed them up.

Sovereign base and it was little America, it's own police force with american squad cars, shopping malls, bowling alleys cinemas etc. F111 base and believe they visited Libya from there. Brilliant for us youngsters as cheap ciggies booze etc from the personnel who rented local property. I haven't been there for years but I think most of it is a housing development and automotive storage. When it warms up maybe have a plod over on the 650.

Yet another report with photo on BBC web site earlier today of a car driving on the left outside a US (UK) airbase in Norfolk

At least the car was on the CORRECT side of the road! Whooophe! Some yank driver who knows he/she is in GB!

Sorry my mistake the reported car was on the right (incorrect) side of the road
It would not have been reported if it was on the correct side

Harry Dunn family wants the government to refuse the extradition of Julian Assange until the US returns the suspect of his death back to the UK..

The Japanese drive on the same side of the road as the UK.. Do visiting US forces have a similar level of Road traffic incidents as they seem to have in the UK..

There are 75 countries and territories on this planet that drive on the left. One of which is India, so in terms of number of people who drive on the left, it’s really isn’t the minority we might first think !

I believe the US should do MUCH more to help their service personnel prepare for this.

As Brits we spend a lot of time on the ‘wrong side’ of the road whenever we visit mainland Europe or the US etc.

There are many tricks that help, putting brightly coloured tape on the near side mirror on a motorcycle and remembering “tape to the kerb”... putting a big arrow on the dashboard of your car pointing to the curb... A big sign on your dashboard... having a little routine to repeat “keep left” to yourself 20 times before driving off, etc, etc.

It ain’t rocket science, and I struggle to understand how it is beyond the wit and ability of the US military / government !!

I don't understand the problem!
Just drive on the side of the road that's appropriate for the country you are in!!
The woman has no conscience and no shame
